trying to find a shop in CT to do this on my S6 as i have no idea if previous owner had done it at all and i’m at about 116k miles now and as i mentioned in a previous post about to do a fair amount of maintenance on it. i’m sure my shop could do it but i don’t think they’ve ever done it so i’d rather not have them experimenting on my car, would like a shop who has their technique down. haven’t heard back from my local dealer regarding it and i suspect i won’t either.
for those that’ve had it done on their S6, what did it cost you? i imagine it probably takes about an hour per cylinder if i want to estimate labor cost?
Depending on where you are in CT, Edge Motors might be a good option. Those guys have a bunch of videos on YouTube of them working on various different VW and Audi models. Could be worth the drive if you’re within an hour or so on the west side of CT.
As far as labor costs for the V10 carbon cleaning… I’ve heard of people coming in around 1300/1400ish on average (Some higher, some lower).
I did this on my own in July and it ran me maybe 50 dollars in terms of solvents, brushes and small vacuum attachments to deal with just the carbon. Combined it was probably about 10 hours for me to tackle the job between breaking it all down, cleaning everything and getting it all back together. (Granted I also replaced the intake manifold and the injectors while I was in there.)
thanks for the shop recommendation, i contacted them and they quoted me approx. $900, which seems quite reasonable, only problem is they’re about 2 hours away, but if they’re the only ones around i guess i’ll have to figure something out
if your going to drive look up jimmy bones on here. He posts alot in this section and has tons of DIY treads in the tech section. He would be the one to contact. He is very very formilure with the V10 motors and used to be an audi tech. He is fast and efficent. He has helped out lots of V10 guys.
900 is about average for carbon cleaning price. But what you really want is make sure they take before and after pictures. Its a must. A few guys have been burnt by shops that did shotty carbon clean work. Even good shops you really should ask for pictures because you cant see the work other wise.
Agree. The dealer that first did my carbon cleaning did the heads but didn’t touch the IM.
thanks for the suggestion, they’re about an hour closer, but unfortunately they’re almost double the cost! $1600 for the cleaning, labor on some of my other maintenance seems reasonable, but charging $39 per coil and $22 per plug (i would supply my own anyway) really bothers me - i guess if they are genuine “VW/Audi” parts as you’d see on ECS those prices are about right, but come on, bosch coils are $21 and ngk laser plugs are $13. so unless i find a place closer i guess i have to weigh the options of driving two hours to NY and renting a car or 1 hour to Branford and still renting a car…damn you direct injection! (shaking fist in the air)
