Cast iron block/sleeves? 4.2

I have heard rumor more then once that there is a cast iron 4.2l, or cast sleeves? At first I heard it was the ART engine code which was in the 2000 a6 4.2l. After inspecting the stamp it seemed to be aluminum, so possibly the s8 has cast iron build to it?

If anyone knows the facts within i’d appreciate it, In time i want to purchase a spare engine and if the a6 or s8 indeed is cast then i will keep my eye out for one in the future.

Thanks,
Rod

While Im not fully aware of all the 4.2 motors here is what I know.

There was the Iron 4.2 and then the aluminum 4.2s. The aluminum 4.2s were test motors much like the RS6 motors. The aluminum motors came in some of the A6 and S8s. I don’t know for sure but I believe that the S6 cars all had the straight iron motors.

The A6 has for YEARS had the bastard motors put in it. Even the 2005 A6 can have a chain or a timing belt motor.

thats so strange how they would mix and match, just like hondas/acuras and toyota/lexus I guess.

Using a test motor in a rs6? but built to the max to handle its abuse. funny how they do that but basterd it and make it work either way haha.

So the S6 possibly had a 4.2l cast iron? What years?
