Central Convenience no comm issue

Hi all - hoping I can get some help here. I’m bringing back an 06 S4 that went over a curb and suffered some front end damage. Bringing it back better, faster, stronger… haha (hopefully for less than 6 million dollars). Along with other damage repair, I’ve replaced front suspension, fitted 034 and Stern mounts, Hotchkiss sway bars, Fast Intentions catback (+ piggies), JHM intermediate timing set, LWCP and LWFW with 3R clutch and PP.

This last weekend I finally got things together enough to fire it. I only let it run for a few seconds, but so far so good. ;D I’m looking for advice on the interior electronics. I have no dome light, no power windows, key fobs won’t sync. VCDS gives me 01330 - Central Control Module for Convenience (J393) 49-00 - No Communications. I had a CCM from an 06 2.0 A4 that I plugged in but still got the same thing. I don’t have a Bentley manual (because I don’t know which one to get that’ll work on my Windows 7 laptop) and really don’t know what I’m looking at or where to start. TIA

Okay let’s start with the simple stuff.

  1. Was the comfort control module or box wet?
  2. Did you check the fuse for the CCM in the fuse panel on the left side of the dashboard?

There is a work around for the Bently manual for Windows 7. I run Microsoft virtual PC on my old laptop that has Windows 7 so it can act like Windows XP to use the Bentley software. Here is a link so that you can look into it for yourself. https://wiki.bentleypublishers.com/plugins/servlet/mobile#content/view/753927

I’ve checked the fuses with a test light. #24 was labeled Central Comfort Electronics and tested good. I didn’t check any of the smaller fuses at the top of the fuse panel. The CC module, mounted up under the dash by the relays, wasn’t wet and didn’t show any signs of corrosion on any of the pins.

Also weird (to me) is that the VCDS autoscan couldn’t connect to 09-Cent. Elect., 19-CAN Gateway. Obviously it didn’t connect to 46-Central Conv. either, with either of the modules I have plugged in.

Check the little fuses too.

It should connect to the 09-Central Electronics but your car doesn’t have a 19-CAN Gateway. The 19-CAN Gateway came out on the newer B8 chassis cars for the B platform. The B6/7 cars all had the simple one CAN bus. The 19-CAN Gateway module is basically a router for all the modules so that is why the non-Gateway cars take forever to Auto Scan with a Vagcom.

Check if the 09-Central Electronics module is wet. Sorry to keep bearing a dead horse but water damage was a big problem with a lot of Audis.

I don’t think of it as beating a dead horse - it’s more like CPR, trying to bring the horse back to life.

So last night I pulled each of the small fuses and tested them with an ohm meter. All were good. I also pulled the CCM loose and took a pic of each side - I didn’t see any evidence of water on the top (metal) part, and verified the pins don’t have any corrosion. I also pulled each of the 3 fuses attached to its housing and tested them for continuity. All were good. I’d like to check for incoming voltage in the three connectors that plug into the module but without wiring diagrams I don’t know what I should see or where it comes from. I’m just thinking that after swapping in another CCM with no improvement/change, the problem probably isn’t with the module itself. I’m totally open to suggestions…

Success!
I had a thought that maybe the headlights are tied in to that CCM circuit somehow so I got them out of the trunk and plugged them in. Searching the interwebz I found an instruction on how to “wake up” modules after being disconnected for a long time. So with headlights plugged in, I hooked up the computer and hit the door lock/unlock button a few times and got my lights, windows, etc. back and VAG-COM could reach things again. Weird little ‘hidden procedure’ there…

Now - on to whatever the next issue is going to be. Thanks for the thoughts and help!

Great follow up. I was going to ask if you had all the stuff like the lights and head lights hooked up. For whatever reason some of the modules will do that and give no feedback after a long down time.

For the benefit of anyone who may be searching in the future, there are two methods I found to try to wake up or restore communication to different modules when Vag-Com won’t connect. The method I used for no connectivity to the CCM was to simply hit lock/unlock on the door a few times when VCDS started its autoscan. The other method I came across was to try putting the hazard lights on, hold the headlights on and on high beam, and hold the brake pedal when initiating the autoscan.

Hopefully this info will help someone else out if they’re having similar problems in the future.

Karma bump for you. Great help for someone that may need it down the line
