Chit Chat

Didn’t see a chit chat thread so figured i’d start one.

Today I washed, clay bar’d, waxed, and buffed my A4. She is happy again! ;D

I’ve got some S4 blades coming in the next week that need painted as well as my trunk lip so figured I better get her ready for some new stuff.

I’m still BADLY needing some new wheels however :-\

Any plans of adding a Classifieds section?

Pictures or it didn’t happen. Its great to get the car all spick and span.

Sure is. I spent last weekend detailing my girlfriends 03 Passat with her. Yes…she actually did help!

wash, iron x (absolutely amazing stuff. If you haven’t tried it…get it!), clay bar, polished with the Porter Cable, and then waxed.

I’m thinking of doing my interior tomorrow. What do you guys use on your leather seats? I have an einzett product I’ve been using for the leather. Always looking to try new stuff. Any suggestions? Please don’t say Swissvax haha.

I use Lexol for the leather, the cleaner then the conditioner.

As far as work on my car I continued to wrap the headliner/pillars

Just a few I took. 8)

I used Lexol as well.
Did my entire interior today.
Car is happy again! ;D

Smoked tails and then the black rims with the gray car. FTW Add the all day wax=stare at for several hours and just realize how nice it looks

I know some like the de-badged look, but I think 3.0 owners should start putting their badges back on.

I thought about taking mine off for a split second, but decided against it. I wear mine with pride.

Yeah, hoping to be getting some new wheels soon which will be matte black.

I actually agree with you, it was de-badged when I got her :-\

I’m not sure if any of you venture out of the B6 A4 section so I am going to post this up here as well.

I am a big fan of Tapatalk for Forums and made a request in the General thread. If anyone else would like to see Tapatalk activated on the AR Forums please post up in my thread and hopfully with enough interest the site admin will incorperate it. ;D
Here is a link to that thread…

Thanks!

Might be a little early but I couldn’t help myself with all the excitement. This came today along with 2 JHM t-shirts. One for me, and one for the girl. The shirts are awesome and comfortable as hell. Any tips on getting those water spots off the window trim? They are quite stubborn!

…buy new window trim. That is really the only actual solution

altho WD-40 is kind of a band-aid for it, however it’s not a permanent solution
I’ve got the chrome trim, but wish I had the black. I think the majority of 3.0’s came with the chrome trim

Plasti-dip them! 8)
I think that’s my plan when I get new wheels! ;D

^yeah tape and paint is what I did with my S4

as for the A6 I installed the rewrapped B and D pillars. Just have to wrap both C pillars and the passenger side A pillar, install and that project is done. Carbon fiber trim comes Saturday so that will be a 1 day turn around I hope. Shave the front bumper, paint it camo, go to waterfest. Then I’m gonna wrap the glovebox door and the underdash with the black suede to match the headliner. Wrap steering wheel and e-brake handle and I think the interior will be done finally.

BRSox I think you might be the first 3.0 guy rocking a JHM sticker!

Beemercer your car looks sick, blacked out is awesome when it’s done right. What wheel/tires are you running?

I’ve thought about blacking out the trim, but I kinda like having the chrome. All 3.0’s and s4’s come stock with the chrome trim, sets us apart from the rest

What’s the wd40 cleaning method?

I found this and thought maybe it could help you with your water spots on the chrome…

Is the window trim actual chrome though? I always thought it was plastic with a chrome looking finish. I have chrome polish but I was afraid that might damage it.

^It’s fake chrome. If it’s not bad, apparently WD40 can help as a band-aid fix, but if you have bad haze, you’re pretty much SOL. Some have wet-sanded and brought the shine back, but it’d be a lot less labor to just paint or wrap. I’m looking to have mine painted soon b/c I’m so sick of the hazy finish that has developed.

Here’s some copy-paste from the thread in the B6/7 S4 section talking about this

Dparm - If the oxidation is heavy, WD40 won’t work.

B6Joe - Also, the OP said he cleaned his roof rails which are bare aluminum as far as i know. this wd-40 trick will NOT work on the window trim. this is because the window trim is clear-coated and the aluminum oxidizes under the clear coat. to remove the oxidation on the window trim, you must first strip/sand away that clear coat and then polish and re-clear it. or just leave it bare and polish as needed

SquiddyB6 - The aluminum trim on this car, and indeed many, many cars on the road, is not “clear coated”. A clear coat typically implies a paint of some sort. The aluminum trim is anodized with a clear layer. This is why it lasts so well, this is why it’s so hard to remove the finish and get to polishing, and this is why it looks like it does when it starts wearing out. The clear anodized layer is very hard, which makes it hard to remove. But the material underneath is thin, so going at it rough is necessary, but it takes a sharp eye to know when you’ve removed the anodized layer and have started removing aluminum. And the microcracks in the anodized layer are why it looks like it does when it starts looking bad. You may put some surface treatment on it, like an oil, to help fill the cracks, but the cracks are still going to be there. The only real, honest fixes are to replace the trim with new or used in good shape (very expensive), strip the anodized layer and reanodize (very expensive), strip the anodized layer, polish, and seal with something less permanent than anodizing (high-maintenance), or continue applying bandaids.

Now, maybe the band-aid method works for a long time, and that would be great, as I’m sure many of us have or will have this problem before long, but I’m just preparing you for the long term. Pretty much all shiny trim pieces these days are aluminum, not chrome, and are hard anodized clear, and not “clear coated” with some form of paint or sealant.

Dparm - Probably easier to just remove the clear anodizing and let it be bare metal. It would require some regular maintenance (polishing), however, or it will tarnish.
