Coolant Refill?

So I am about to try to replace the 0-rings on the oil cooler on my S6. To get to that, I need to drain the coolant and remove the radiator.

What is the best way to refill the system with coolant? Any special proceedures?

I was just going to fill the overflow tank as much as it will take hopefully filling most of the system. Then start the car to work out any air and top off. Maybe repeat a few times.

Is it that simple?

There is a bleeder screw on the coolant hose under the plenum cover right next to the reservoir for the brake fluid.

I crack that open, (pack some rags around it), fill the expansion tank, start the car and turn the temperature controls to the MAX.
You will have to add quite a bit of fluid to the expansion tank once the engine is started.
You will hear air coming out the bleeder. Once you start getting straight fluid, close it. Keep adding fluid to the tank as necessary. Put the cap back on once the level stops dropping. Allow engine to warm up fully so both top hoses are warm. I usually go for a short drive if the vehicle is back together. Shut the engine off and allow to fully cool. Recheck level in tank and add as necessary.

I have used the above procedure six times in the last three years without issue.

great post

sounds like you’re working faster than I am on the maintenance end, spaceme1

Sounds good. I will do that.

As far at the maintenance, I guess I am a bit OCD when even little things on my car are not right. And I really enjoy working on my cars.

I also have a very slow leak of my windshield washer reservior at the lower pump. It was the hose leaking at first but now that the hose is not leaking, the pump itself began to leak. So I will be changing out both the hose and the pump. Tired of seeing a small blue puddle under the front driver’s side tire.
