Couple of S6 newbie questions...maybe?

Hi all, new to the forum but looks like this is the place for S6 info and/or help!

Had a couple of (hopefully simple) questions about my 2007 S6. First off, i was wondering if anyone knows how to manually adjust the headlights. Meaning adjust the beam height or vertical adjustment. I have the xenons with integrated fog lights and the adaptive function (beams turn with your steering wheel).

I’ve done some browsing for info but a lot of it seems confusing or more model specific to the A6. When I pop my hood I see two white, hex style adjustment screws on the headlight assemblies. One closer to the front of the car, one closer to the rear. I’m very familiar with VAG-COM and have a hex-can cable so I can put the car into learning mode and all that good stuff but I’m not sure which screw is for the height/vertical adjustment. Hoping someone has done this before I go down the trial-and-error route.

My second question is about an issue that seems to be somewhat common on the earlier C6 models (as far as I could tell), but not a lot of info on it. Anyway, the issue is that sometimes (maybe once every 4 months) the car will not start. The push button start does nothing (no cranking, no sound, nothing) and using the physical key does nothing. The MMI does come on, but no other dash lights. After the first time this happened I did some code scanning with my VAG-COM and found a circuit fault in module 05 “Acc/Start Auth.” I don’t recall the code off the top of my head, but I’m sure I have the code saved somewhere. Anyway, after resetting the fault the car starts up without any issues.

I did some searching on this issue about 6 months back or so but could only really find that people claim it’s some transponder problem that is inside the steering column and the whole column needs to be replaced. After looking at the price for a new steering column I decided to just toss an old laptop into my trunk along with my vagcom cable instead, lol. Has anyone encountered this and maybe knows a workaround instead of just replacing the whole column?

Thanks!

Sorry I just saw this.

If you can take a quick picture of the top of the headlights.

As for the start button this has been a mix of bad starters and messed up module issues.

Post the pictures and the codes and we should be able to help you much more.

Welcome.

Here are a few shots of the headlights.

This is the left side:

And here is the right side:

Each side has one adjustable hex screw that sits a lot lower than the other. I’m just not sure which one adjusts which way.

Regarding my second question about the occasionally not starting issue. Here is a copy of the error code from vagcom:

Thanks!

If your headlights are like the other ones there might not be tons of adjustment.

From what I have done you need to go into vagcom bring up the headlights in the module selection. Then click adjust. From there the car should be in adjustable mode. The car might adjust the headlights on its own. If not the big top screw should control the up and down the little one should be side to side.

Make sure to adjust the headlights at night against a building.

Justin should be right about adjusting the headlights. I forget which screw does the height adjustment and which screw does the lateral adjustment. Make sure that you go into learning mode through the vagcom or the headlights will go right back to where they were before.

As for the starting issue, sorry to say but you are screwed. Audi in their infinite wisdom decided to make the access start control module apart of the steering column/steering column control module so they both have to be replaced together. It is fairly easy labor wise but the part is very expensive and you would need the dealership to program the computers and keys. I am pretty sure that the dealership would have to suck the information out of the old access start control module with their scan tool then swap in the new parts and program everything. The Q7s are the same way but for some reason the access start control module did not really ever fail on the Q7s like they did on the C6 A6s/S6s.

Thanks for the info! I’ll probably mess around with the headlights tomorrow night so I’ll report back then.

As for the starting problem…yeah I kind of figured that was the case. Oh well, like I said it only happens once every 4-6 months so it’s not like it’s really that big of a problem. Takes me a minute or two to plug in my laptop and reset the code.

Thanks again for the help!

Karma for Jimmy. Anytime he puts in information you can bet it’s solid information.

As I mentioned. Use a building as a reference and park about 15 to 20 feet back. Turn on the lights and see how they show up on the building. From there take a reference picture or video. If you can scribe a line on the building or put up some painter tape that is a good use for helping level the lights.

Depending in the lights and how they are set you might need to spin the top screw and side screw to keep the path adjustment correct as the bulb moves through its path
