DIY - Battery disconnect - most B5/6/7 and C5 cars

Why: This is a safety step prior to doing most repairs. It is better to be safe than sorry. Plus most people are not good at arch welding when they get near starters and alternators.

Tools Required:
10 mm socket and ratchet or wrench

Steps:

  1. Open driver’s door and pull the hood release.
  2. Open the hood.
  3. Remove rubber stripping on the front edge of the cowl wall cover. I usually start by pulling it off the passenger side and then slowly pull it off the rest of the edge.

  1. Remove the cover over the cowl area. It just slides right out so that way you can see the AC vent inlet, battery, brake booster and master cylinder, and ECM box.

  1. Use the 10 mm socket and ratchet or wrench to loosen the nut for the negative (black) battery cable and take it off the battery. I like to shove the negative battery cable under the metal AC lines in front of the AC vent inlet on the left side so that way it doesn’t move back into place if somebody shakes the car.

  2. I personally like to put the cover over the cowl area and rubber stripping back into place so that I can use that area as a spot to put tools on when I am working on the rest of the engine compartment.

  3. Once you are done with other repairs go ahead and reattach the negative battery cable to the battery. This DIY is really that simple!

Even simpler on the RS4. :smiley:

(unless you’re still looking under the hood… ::slight_smile: )

That is why I said this was for most cars. The battery is in the trunk for the B7 RS4s, C6 A6s, D3 A8s, and most B8/newer cars.

Do you know where the battery is in a Q7?

Under the drivers seat?

Bingo.

Really?? That seems unsafe to me…

I only know cos it’s the same in the Touareg
