Can anyone provide their thoughts on approaching engine removal at home? I don’t have access to a lift or “scissor-type assembly platform” (VAS 6131 A). However, I believe knowing this will will help me sleep better and also create opportunity for tuning and fun. Thx!
What exactly are you trying to do? Maintenance? Just tuning and fun?
If you can explain more of what your trying to do and what year. I can give you a better idea
The single owner “very well maintained” 2008 s6 seemed likely a ideal candidate at under 100k - and very well is, but I’m nervous about the starter and o2 sensors mainly. I don’t know the likelihood of these failing since the carbon cleaning has been done to avoid build up of which could affect the o2 sensors, but dropping the motor for the starter makes me want to be able to do it and maybe exhaust upgrades while I’m in there. Is it a feasible project without a lift?
It can be done with a cherry picker/engine crane by pulling it out the front. Pull everything off the front of the car and then disconnect everything from the engine/transmission to be able to move it out the front of the car. It is not fun in my opinion any way to remove a V10 because the engine is so big but that is just me.
If you are going to pull the engine/trans then I would also replace the water pump and engine mounts. Check your spark plug tube seals too.
Thanks Jimmy - hopefully not any time soon, but it does peek my interest.
I agree with the above, in my opinion it’s much better to just make a list of preventative maintenance items to have done, all at once, while the engine is out. Then just pay someone to do it. It’s not going to be cheap, but that’s why you want to make sure you only have to do it once.
After seeing the motor out of the header S6 car I would say its going to be a struggle trying to pull the motor out the front. Right now the best thing to do is just keep the car well maintained. Iwould not suggest pulling the motor to act in a preventive fashion. Make sure to stay ontop of the usual suspects like plugs oil and fuel filter. Use a good fuel system cleaning additive after every oil change or sooner to keep the injectors happy. If you do a carbon clean again install the JHM intake spacers. Its good for keeping heat down and a cleaner intake.
I wouldn’t be taking out the engine and gearbox just for the craic.
Its a massive lump and as you can see from the photo’s not an insubstantial lump.

Wow. Thank you for the photos!
Thats for the pix. That should be very helpful to lots of people. I dont think people can gauge just how big the motor and trans is without seeing it like that. Its much better to drop the motor on that can then to try and pull it out the front.
Was this for your motor swap they did or was this maintanince
No problem, thank you for having a forum that I can share this information.
My engine blew up at 74k miles and this was in the investigation phase when there was a possibility that I might be liable for the removal and then cost of replacement.
I’m sorry but I had some really good shots of the engine and gearbox as a whole out of the car and the size of it is truly shocking I’ll see if I can find them.
