Do I need this special tool to install the camshafts?

Do I need this special tool to install the camshafts? I cant find a aftermarket version of it I’m not sure if I even need it. What does it actually do? Thanks!

Looking in my Bentley manual, I would say no.

They appear to only be used to align the cam frame with the head. As long as you have a couple of pieces of metal or hard plastic rod that is the exact diameter of the locating holes in the head and a way to pull the rods back out, you don’t need those specific tools.

But you do need a couple of rods to align things.

From what I can tell and what I have seen they look like dowels. Just alignment pegs. Helpful to have. I would say you don’t need those but your going to want to have something to help keep the alignment of the top section as you put it back on.

I used the dowels. they are very helpful to make sure it lines up completely square. I dont recall if there are any permenant dowels in there. Can check my youtube video about reinstalling the cam carrier.
If there are no dowels you need those, or you risk bolting down the carrier a little off square.

As spaceman mentioned, get yourself some rod that is of exact dimension where the OEM tool fits into and you will be ok. They are a very light press fit (tap them in with the end of a screwdriver)

try mcmaster.com for rod.

2nd they have a great selection.

Anyone have the tool that can measure the size for me? I will try and measure the hole in the head I just want to verify.
