Sent a few emails out to see what dates and costs are for Norwalk, Ohio which is Summit Speedway or something like that and also MidMichigan Motorplex, in Stanton Michigan. I have a few BMW friends that would want to go, friend with a mclearn slr that wanted to go as well…
Now that Summit took over Norwalk they are doing less rentals and the price is up there… Can’t hurt to contact them… It is one of the best strips in the country no doubt… I can contact Thompson for pricing and availability… It will be much cheaper and they rent it out quite a bit, though it is usually week days… The owners and guys who run it are very cool and I won’t say laxed with the rules but they aren’t strict… I run my Mustang w/o a cage and Norwalk throws me out after one pass! LOL
Yeah lapeer sucks. It’s not smooth, you actually start going uphill before you finish, it’s just not nice.
Another track that is great is 131 raceway in Martin MI, just outside of Grand Rapids. That way we could include the Chicago crews and the rest. I have a huge group of audi friends from Grand Rapids, JFonz is there as well lol!
Lapeer would be great for renta because it’s so ghettol. Milan costs a fortune. Toronto Motorsports Park costs a fortune. St. Thomas Raceway (also in southern ontario) is cheap. The odds of you americans coming to Canada are slim to none. So focusing on the MI based tracks again…Grand Rapids is interesting. Way up north though.
Ideally? 20 or so cars for around $100 each. Is that possible?
The Benz guys rent ATCO for $200/head every few months. (speaking of the mbworld.org guys… those fuckers like the dragstip…and that’s interesting. They are RWD and make MONSTER power. Why don’t they hate the dragstrip? Why aren’t they calling it irrelevant and saying 60-130 is best? Simple. Because their shit works as advertised ! It’s a huge market so the pretenders get weeded out real quick. There are 25 AMG Mercedes for every B5 S4. Same in the mustang and vette world…they all love the dragstrip. Why? Arguably they’re terrible for the strip with big power big torque and tire spinning badness with limited technology. Simple. It’s a huge market and the pretenders get weeded out of there as well. The good stuff does well, and it gets proven properly.
As a tuner, there’s nothing scary about the dragstrip when your shit works. No need to build this culture of fear (“my car will break so I won’t go”) and/or shame (“I was slow, so I must suck at driving”).
TnT on Wed. at Thompson is $12 and you get 3-6 passes before bracket racing starts assuming you get there when it opens… They charge $20 on Sat. for TnT and will let you run from open until race time and if it isn’t a huge event you can get 4-8 passes… huge events draw a crowd and you are lucky to get 2 passes so those are the days I try to avoid… If you want to race for $'s it is $35…
I believe but need to confirm it was $1,300 last year to rent the track for about 6-8 hours, but again this is during the day on a weekday… I have an email into them for official pricing and available dates, just to put it out there… I am more than willing to cover a nice chunk of the cost as well…
It’s a decent track at 1230 elevation… big paved parking areas, decent prep, good folks running it, etc. It’s not Norwalk but it works…
Yep $12! Ouch on the sticks… I live in Concord which is 30 minutes east of Cleveland, Thompson is another 15 minutes further east… It’s actually a very nice area but rural… I wanted to buy farther out that way as you can get a ton of land and huge house cheap where as Concord is much much pricer but the wife didn’t want to live that far east as we both work downtown…
Any track we pick is going to be a hike for most of us… just trying to find a mid point based on where everyone is and if we can do it cheap, why not… If we could get 50 cars at $20-$25 and the total price is around $1,500 I’ll eat the rest since it’s my home track and I will only need to drive 15 minutes… Will also gladly host a get together at my house after if anyone is interested…
Why doesn’t everyone who is interested post their city, state and we can figure out the best location… Oh and you northeners can post your province! LOL
I was just joking about the sticks…it’s definitely a drive for a bunch of guys no matter what. I just meant the cost is so cheap because where you are is not really near a large city. I don’t consider cleveland a large city. It’s not even larger than Hamilton or Mississauga which are both 9 minutes from me (population of 700,000 each)…nevermind Toronto which is only 20 minutes driving to the downtown core…and is 4 million people. The closer you are to big population centres, the more expensive everything gets. That applies to dragstrips and definitely to real estate (it’s about $500,000 for a townhouse on a 30x89 foot lot here in my town lol). Supply and demand. I’m totally jealous of your $12 wednesdays. If I was 20 minutes from Cayuga and it was $12 I’d go weekly.
Saki, I knew you were joking, it’s all good… Cleveland is actually the 45th biggest city in the US so it’s not too bad… Also, those stats are very skewed because it is based on how the city limits are defined and given the issues of most big cities, people tend to live outside the city as I am sure you are aware… Hey it’s home for me and other than some winters it’s a much nicer area then people give it credit for but I digress…
Now maybe you understand why I go to the strip all the time, not only do I enjoy it, but it’s cheap! LOL
that’s an awesome deal. Looks like right on Lake Erie. Ever see Bald Eagles around the area? There are a bunch out your way. It’s only about 4 hrs from where I live.
