DSG slow on kick down

You should definitely service that DSG! VCDS cable is worth it’s weight in gold.

I doubt GIAC or REVO will sell you just a DSG tune with the APR ECM tune. APR claims to be on it, but the previous car used for DSG development was an employee’s, who has since left the company (Arin mentioned this on AZ). He claimed they bought a new car for development, but who really knows. APR’s ROI for the DSG tune will be pretty high though, especially amongst facelift cars, who have reduced redlines.

Thanks drob23.

First order of business…get vagcom cable!!! Then, service dsg, clear codes…do adaptation with test drive. If it’s still not as crisp as it should be…see if I can get an eta for APR’s dsg tune. ;D

I’ll update as I move forward. I’m guessing anyone with a dsg will eventually deal with this issue of sloppiness.

I am changing my fluid in 2 weeks along with both filters!

I will update if I notice any improvements.

Right after they stop losing all of the engineering guys who figure this stuff out. Or once they steal it from someone.

Did you ever figure out the launch control reset?

Nothing yet, might be starting the year using the sidestep method! Which isn’t bad and has proven solid times! My best and most consistent 60’s were done using LC however.

Damn sucks that they really require a complete new mech unit. Does the sidestep method still work no problem? I was reading somewhere that the LC counter takes more than formally using LC. Like it somehow detects the sidestep method and uses it against you. I should check my counter, because I’ve probably used LC like 5 times, but the quick launch method a lot.

Ring it out I would like to hear how the change of fluid goes that should be able to fix it or atleast make it better. Try resetting the DSG computer after you do the fluid.

Is there a thread on this. The counter should be set in the ecu. That’s what I remember being told for the R32 and the golf cars with DSG.

I will report back if I notice anything. Going to figure out steps for resetting transmission adaptations. As for now we are dead in water when it comes to launch control reset without new mech unit. My trans is still performing well, slight hiccups on 2-3 shift. The counter is set in the TCU I posted a picture of it in a thread somewhere, let me find it.

Found it, lol didn’t take long.

Over on AZ there is this one talking about the LC apparently not requiring the formal actuation to “count” as a launch…

Seeing this makes this even worse. But it could be a good thing. If you know how it triggers the counter you might be able to fool the counter.

justincredible…sorry for the delayed response. Have had a death in the family. As soon as I have a chance to get the service completed, I’ll definitely update with my findings.

The service should really help. As I said also make sure to reset the DSG computer that will help as well.

My 14 has 19K on the clock and has never had any issues. However, I do on occasion feel like the downshift when I demand max blast is a bit slower than I’d like. It doesn’t always respond slowly. I always drive in S and have noticed a difference sometimes. No explanation but the car behaves well and I’ve had no DSG issues. I just think it the way the DSG software behaves.

levigarrett, I took a '15 out recently and noticed that the delay had more to do with what felt like timing being pulled…as opposed to the transmission responding slowly. Shifts felt crisp and MUCH more immediate than what I’m currently experiencing with my car at WOT with the shifter in D or S. Though, it’s a bit quicker in S. I don’t have Drive Select.

It will be interesting to see if your transmission kick down starts to slow down as you near the first service interval…which I believe is 35k miles.

Don’t get me wrong, my DSG shifts very well. It’s only on two gears or more kick down that the delay shows up. There is going to be *some delay due to the nature of the dsg trans. But, mine is definitely not crisp and way more delayed. But, remember I have 104k miles, stage II tune and last trans service was at 67k miles. So, it’s due for service. Otherwise, from a dig…it’s a rocket. Down shifting manually…it’s right there. Only in auto mode does the significant delay occur. I truly believe that it’s like justincredible has stated…might have some faults to be cleared and service with fresh tranny fluid/filter. Tech at my dealer has also offered to recalibrate /adaptation while doing a test drive. Probably can’t hurt!

This may have already been mentioned above, but keep in mind that there are a few potential delays here.

  1. The DCT will preemptively select what it thinks will be your next gear selection on the opposite gear set (e.g. if you are in 6, then it will select either 5 or 7);
  2. If you want to down shift more than 2 gears, it will need to shift at least twice 7 -> 3 would be 7-6-3. In this example, I’m not sure whether the even clutch need be engaged, I’d guess not;
  3. Depending whether you’re in ‘S’ mode or ‘D’ mode, it may filter your pedal for a little, probably not if you hit the kick down. Point is the calibration may not allow the car to go “beast mode” if you just stab the pedal, maybe accidentally or in a manner unintended.;
  4. Obviously will take time to rev match, the further you are from where you want to be such as the 7-3 shift.

Those are what I would consider causes for delay. If you beat on the car then the shifts are about as quick as you can ask for, so the major issue is getting used to the behavior when driving in public. I rarely if ever go full WOT while cruising in 7th, the car just seems too fast for that on public roads. Plenty of torque in 5th to pass nearly any other car.

I always drive in manual mode, so if I need more torque or power, I just downshift and preemptively know when the car will start pulling (maybe .5 sec or so). Also, my exhaust drones a bit on the HWY when in high gear, so I am constantly shifting to navigate decent traffic at around 75 mph on my work commute.

Same here. Haven’t driven in Auto mode since the first few months with the car. With the exception of the dragstrip of course.

lol, yeah, when up to speed, I haven’t floored it on the highway yet too, its too fast, you’ll be over 100 in a few seconds, if you even have the space, and I’m tired of getting tickets! … plus you look like a jack ass going that fast, putting all the other cars around you at higher risk.

Hey drob23…excellent description of what has to occur for the dsg to downshift two or more gears. This makes complete sense! You did note that point earlier in the thread.
I’m comparing how the '14’s and '15’s manage those downshifts while in auto mode to mine. So, I fully understand the “delay” associated with the dsg trans and how it’s managing rev matching as well as gear selection.

It might just be the age of my trans and miles? In any case, the newer S4’s do not exhibit this much delay that I’m currently dealing with.

I can’t wait to get the box serviced and any faults cleared as well as an adaptation session with test drive. I’m hoping to get it done next week.

I also find it much more pleasing to use manual mode. I recently found that while in S mode…I can pull the paddles at any time to override the auto selection…very cool to control shifts without having to go back up to D and then move the shifter over to the manual mode!!! Love that feature.

Well done. Great explanation. Makes perfect sense to me now. I never suspected that there was something wrong with my car, just didn’t really grasp why the tranny seemed to perform differently from time to time.
