dvious S6 build/maint thread

Thought I’d start my own thread as I have quite a few updates. Here’s my 08 S6 with about 85K on the clock:

I’m a long time VAG car owner but in the past few years moved towards Porsche cars. This is my first venture back into the Audi space.

About two months into ownership I decided to start taking on some of the bigger preventative maintenance issues on the car including a torn CV boot (still not completed), valve cleaning, leaking water pump replacement and a tranny fluid replacement (still not completed). Here are some general pics from those if they may help anyone:

Here is a before pic of the valves:

And after:

Some more pics I took a long the process:

Decided I should go ahead and replace the plugs while I had everything out. Not sure whose bright idea this was:

Also, found some oil in that plug. I pretended I didn’t see that and put everything back together after replacing the plugs. ;D

Since the manifold was off and noticed some oil sitting on top of the block from kind of around where the oil filter housing I’d replace the flange gasket since it was accessible. Audi is VERY proud of these:

Noticed my water pump was leaking so a new one of those goes in as well:

After the car was back together and I went to drive it the next day this happened:

I had left the hose clip a little loose from one of the top hoses on the pump:

So the bumper cover must come off again:

Refilled with coolant and I’ve been great ever since.

Here are some random interior pics:

My next project is to install the MMI ipod adapter: 4E0057785F

I’ve read a few times online that I need to update my MMI but haven’t quite figured out how to do that yet. So if anyone has a link or instructions I’d like to figure out exactly what I need before I spend the cash on this very expensive part.

Great work. Its hard to explain to some poeple just how bad the carbon can be. Once you get in there you really see the effects of it. If you didnt this time consider putting in the JHM intake spacers next time and make sure you keep out your cylinder port spacer.

The JHM intake spacers DRAMATICALLY drop intake manifold temp. They make for a great performance additve along with also helping keep the motor running cooler.

As for the oil in the cylinder. Sometimes you can get lucky and just have the oil be from the valve cover gasket. If the oil was on the passenger side back 2 or 1 it could be because you have the old style valve covers.

Great car! Looks just like my 2008! ;D

I have to do a tensioner and water pump too. Did you remove the condenser too? I don’t see it in the pic. Really don’t want to evacuate the refrigerant.

Porsche and audi in the garage is a nice combo. Kudos to you for coming back to audi, and finding a real (still kind of hidden) gem of a car and motor. Your also in the right place.

A few maint items and minor Bolton JHM mods and you will be bettter than how it rolled off the assembly line. Plus 1 on the IM spacers tip noted above. Any further plans to share? Also, what other cars are in the garage, pics of the beaut 911 :-p please.

Great pics. Added you on IG also. Great pics there as well

Great-looking car!

I’m continually amazed at the time and effort people have to put into working on their cars. I must be doing something wrong, because that type of free time just doesn’t seem to exist in my life…

2nd on the details of the 911!

Where are you located, if I may ask?

I had replace my radiator, and you can just swing the condenser and power steering cooler out of the way. I did not remove either.

Maaaannnnn I love the Platinum interior! Had that in my B6 S4 and miss that dearly.

I’m in Dallas.

The red car is a 77’ 911S Turbo Look. It’s in REALLY great condition. But it is a driver. I do not baby it. I’m in it min 4 times a week if all is running well.

We also have a 911 SC eurospec that we race:

Pure deliciousness. Plus 1 on nicer drivers, only way to really own and drive Porsche if you are a true Car enthusiast.

Not to derail but what are the specs on the race car and what class?

I got to run a prepped 993GT2, full slicks at motorsports ranch many years ago; I’ve never been more terrified behind the wheel, ever. Indelible! Was being pushed by a ViperGTS, with the owner of the car egging me on. F me that’s terrifying! Carbon/carbon brakes, full slicks, big boost single turbo. Amazing. I’m jealous of your collection! Aircooled 911’s - there’s absolutely nothing like them.

The gt2 are special, but your right any aircool is a different breed. I do think their values are in a little bit of a bubble but they are really cool cars and inventory isn’t exactly high so who knows

Great pictures and beautiful car. Thanks for sharing the info!

As the heat has risen here in Texas my AC has slowly started to perform worse. Two weeks ago it wouldn’t cool until I started driving. This week it’s been perfect. Sort of odd. Thoughts?

usually the first thing you get is the suggestions to look at the HVAC system and see if there are any codes. Sometimes the fans in the front end start go get a little wacky and when that happens you dont get a good heat pull from the exchanger. Its a good idea to have your system levels checked to make sure there are no leaks or there is no low fluid issue. Also a big issue is our compressors are not all that great and if there are any flakey isues the compressors are easy to die. So that is a possible thing to look into as well
