I think he was, and it felt closer than the video made it look. I was surprised I had a better 60’ time.
I think you would have ran better if you did some adaptation runs after filling the 104 octane. That trap is pretty good!
Probably so. I only put about 8-10 miles on it after adding the 104. I usually try to do 25-30. I didn’t plan it out very well, so I had to make do.
We went a few weeks ago for a “Test-N-Tune” day, and I didn’t get to make a single pass after sitting in the staging lane for over 4 hours. I had kind of sworn off going back any time soon. That last time I had bought 5 gallons in advance, run the tank all the way down to about 30 miles past 0, and filled up about 20 miles from the track. All for nothing, so I wasn’t going to go through that again not knowing if I was even going to get any passes in. The organization at that track sucks when there are more than 20 cars there…
heartbreaker dyno AND heartbreaker track? Man you guys have it rough.
question: why put 93 + e85 in when you’re running the race gas file and are putting 50 lbs of race gas in? None of that makes sense.
I filled up with the 93/E85 mix a couple weeks ago (I don’t drive my car much). I got to the track with about 2 gallons of that left in the tank, and I felt like I needed to put something in. It took around 4-5 gallons of 104 octane to get the 94ish octane I already had over 100. I accepted a long time ago that my car isn’t very fast, so an extra 50 lbs. or whatever isn’t a concern.
Texas Motorplex isn’t slow, but it’s not the fastest either. I’m not sure what’s wrong with pointing that out. I’ve shared a lot of information about my car, and it’s performance. Every form of measurement should have some context in regards to how/where/when the data is collected. Some tracks are faster than others. Some dynos read higher than others. It’s easy for some people to misconstrue results without that context.
Texas Motorplex is the only 1/4-mile track anywhere close to Dallas/Ft. Worth. 6 million people live in the area, so any time there are decent conditions, it’s packed. This past Friday were the best conditions I’ve seen in many trips there, and it was still in the positive 400 to 800 DA range most of the night. Combine that with the elevation, so-so track prep, long/slow staging lanes, and it’s not the best combination of factors. It’s not horrible either (at least until June)…
I’ll fully admit that I’m not an expert on drag strips, so if there is something I’m missing in regards to those factors, let me know. It just seems like the tracks at sea level, or where you get a -1000 DA on a sunny day, are faster in the most basic sense.
Nice run Josh. Trap is pretty nice though I’d expect slightly more with the TCU tune… Looks like the 2-3 shift was a bit sloppy too. Still better than my best trap at Milan by a tiny bit!
My experience with having more than one fuel type in the tank has always been bad. You may very well have seen a nicer ET with just the race gas in like you had done for the previous track day… Plus DA wasn’t exactly stellar so you had that against you
I find my car runs best when I drive it far past 0, then fill up and let it adapt with the race has. I wouldn’t say your car is slow… Don’t know why one b8 s4 would be faster than another? Though I have seen that posted around on here before… I think if you can snag a nice DA and get the fuels sorted out, you’ll squeeze a bit more out of the car
Slap that second pulley on before the next outing ;D
.
Thanks!
You are right, the 2-3 shift isn’t great.
I usually try to run the tank 25-30 miles past 0 to change the fuel type, and then another 25-30 miles with the new fuel. That seems to work best for me. I had about 5 miles left showing on the display when I got to the track, and after driving in rush hour traffic for 1.5 hours, I didn’t feel like driving another 45 minutes to burn off all the fuel. The logs I got actually looked pretty good (24-25 degrees of timing, little to no knock, no bypass).
My car isn’t slow, but I don’t have LW rotors and my wheels are average for lighter wheels. My BBK actually weighs a few pounds more than the stock brakes, and my wheel/tire combo is about 46-47 lbs. I also don’t know that I’ll ever run in a better DA than these passes. It’s about the best we can ask for. I guess what I should say is my car is never going to sniff the record pass times.
I’m definitely considering the oversized crank pulley, but I don’t know. I’m pretty happy with where the car is now, and it’s never really been about squeezing everything out of it. I originally got into going to the drag strip just as a way to make sure the car was doing what it should. Now that I finally feel like it is, I’m not sure how much further I want to take it. With that said, I’d like to see a better revision of the DSG tune, and I’m going to think about the dual pulley and the E85/HPFP upgrade.
that trap should put you at 11.6x with a better 60ft.
on a side note, I’m deciding between dual pulley with my standard GIAC race map (cheaper route) or just getting some 21lbs wheels with PSS’s that are 4lbs lighter than stock OEM S5 rotors (more expensive, but more consistent in unsprung reduction effect).
thoughts?
