E85 pass... not quite...

So I recently installed the APR upgraded hpfp and had the e85 tune loaded… Logged some things per APR and beat on the car around town. No codes and it ran well… lambda, rail pressure, fuel trims, fuel pump pressure, etc seemed to look good… I decided to hit Thompson today to test the tune…

My car: 2010 Audi S4 – DSG with sports dif, 9,650 miles with 1/4 tank of E85, tools and spare removed.

Mods: APR E85 tune, APR DSG tune with LC disabled, APR pulley, APR HPFP, JHM overdrive crank pulley, 034 HFC’s, Miltek non-res exhaust, custom intake, APR CPS, front and rear sways, Alu Kruez, Apikol dif mount, 034 tranny mount, Brembo 380MM BBK, JHM LW rear rotors, BBS CHR’s, tire pressure 32F – 28R

DA was 650 so about as good as last week and a little worse than the time before when I went 11.50…

Only was able to attempt 1 pass… Car launched extremely well, probably best ever, hit 2nd strong and pulled hard, shifted to third and it falls on it’s face and shudders and makes two clunks… Ruh oh… Babied it to the pit area… Ran a scan and had the 3 faults below… One was from 2 days ago, my dumbass should have scanned this morning before making passes but I didn’t. Don’t think it attributed to the others and is probably a random issue? I got the lean fault on start up right before making a pass and then the fuel pressure one during the pass. Logs had the car drop timing and dump boost. I threw no CEL so I’m hoping there is no damage done? Going to pull the plugs most likely Sunday… Cleared the codes after scanning and then the car wouldn’t start… Took several attempts and then finally started and pretty much seemed to be fine, but I pretty much babied it home…

Talking with APR… I assume the plugs/motor will check out fine and will see what they want to do…

Wonder if your plugs are fouled?

“Ruh oh” for sure.

got the slip? let’s see what you were on pace for

Sounds like the car should be ok. I would think the car from the codes went into lean limp mode and just shut the throttle on you. Chances are the intake pump couldnnt keep up with the demand of E85.

What was the AFR request. Its suposed to be more then just pump gas AFR is.

would an inline booster be beneficial for this platform for either E85 mixes or on top of a HPFP for those going all out E85? Curious to see your results after pulling the plugs.

Loe, Will check them out hopefully today and post some pics… My understanding prior to testing was a upgraded hpfp is all that is needed at these levels, pushing further would require a upgraded in tank pump or booster…

Justin, I hope you’re right… I put the video on youtube, caution for the feint of heart as it’s pretty bad… lol

Wow it’s a loud bang. 3 of them.

Car was normal the rest of the time? Like on the way home?

P. S. Your link is for you to edit the video I think. Wouldn’t work. Here’s a normal link

Yes I thought it was pretty bad… I didn’t beat on the car as I figured I didn’t want to push my luck so I left after that pass w/o attempting another… I babied it home and didn’t go wot… No codes or faults when I got home but haven’t driven it since… Want to check the plugs and go from there… Starts and idled ok after the initial issues starting it at the track… Edited my post thanks for the heads up on the video, sorry about that…

Yikes! :o

Glad you and the car made it home alright.

Ok you must be a cool customer after deciding to turn on the radio and listen to Sublime after that event. Love that song.

Fingers crossed, something minor like Justin said, I’d bet fuel cut too.

Figured I’d do a quick update… So started the car several times yesterday and let it run… Did NOT drive it though… No CEL’s ever appeared, no fault codes after doing scans after each startup, and nothing sounds strange all obviously good signs… My brother and I pulled the plugs and they look fine. A little brownish from the race gas but fine, no oil, no metal flakes, or any debris for that matter and they were all fully intact… Talked with APR… Going to remove the hpfp, reinstall the stock one, and flash the race gas non-hpfp tune. Will then drive the car and get it into load and see how it goes. The thought is the hpfp has an issue and may have seized… Will send it back to APR for their review… The one concern is that when the hpfp seized it may have damaged the lobe on the camshaft that drives it, but I won’t know until we pull the pump, which will most likely be Wed. as my work schedule won’t allow it prior to then. If the lobe is damaged the camshaft will need to be replaced and I’d probably just have the dealer do that… I’ll update once I know more and am open to others thoughts…

J, LOL! Yeah, that’s kind of my normal routine usually shut off the video prior but my mind was occupied… Was wondering who I could get to build me a motor… lol Hopefully, I won’t need that but we’ll see…

May be my crappy speakers, but were the bangs just back fires/ popping of the exhaust?

Jake, Not 100% sure but I don’t think so… At first I thought maybe I broke the drive shaft or some other drive line component since it sounded more mechanical but that doesn’t appear to be the case… Honestly, still not sure what it was as my other guess was the motor massively detonating but that doesn’t appear to be the case either… Not sure if a seized hpfp could make that noise when the cam tries to activate it?

Have you checked your mounts? Could have broken an Engine/Trans mount as the engine and drive line shifted heavily causing the thump

Interesting… No I haven’t done that… Any tips on how I can go about that in my garage?

You can really see the leaking fluid more than anything. It’s a purplish color, and smells really bad…

If you can get the car in the air on jacks or something you should be able to poke around with a flash light.

B8 engine mounts fail ALL the time. The OEM design is pretty weak. Bellow is a post I made on AZ a while back

Failed OEM Engine Mounts:

https://jhmotorsports.com/products/pictures/mounts/WHERE_YOU_CAN_SEE_LEAKAGE_WITH_MOUNTS_STILL_IN_CAR.jpg

  • These OEM Engine Mounts are filled with fluid, and the easiest way to determine that they have failed is to look for the trails left over from the engine mount fluid leaking. If you see any trials that look like the image above, you likely have a popped/failed engine mount that is needing to be replaced.

https://jhmotorsports.com/products/pictures/mounts/Bad_PAIR_JHM_S5_RIPPED.jpg

  • As you can see, it doesn’t take much tearing of the OEM Rubber mount to cause significant leakage of the mount fluid. By the time the OEM mount is able to leak, the mount can no longer adequately support the engine.

https://jhmotorsports.com/products/pictures/mounts/Bad_PAIR_CUSTOMERS_CAR_MURDER_SCENE_WITH_FLUID.jpg

  • If you continue to drive using a failed engine mount, the mount will continue to deteriorate until the engine is no longer connected to the mount, which can cause serious unwanted engine movement. This can open the possibility of damage to other components.

There’s also the billet mounts too… ;D

Were you able to figure out what the issue was?
