Ecs tuning oil cooler

Any feedback on this?! Or what you guys use out there?!

ask JHM…they have something I believe.

Not a bad price. These cars seem to run so hot you’d think cooling down the oil even more would be a great thing to do.

Yep ill def ask JHM , and our cars seems to run a bit hot! Specially SC!

what’s your oil temp when you’re just driving along but are warmed up?

My car is generally around 100 celsius. Maybe 102. When I’m pushing it for an extended period I’ll see 110 C.

That’s 212, 216 and 230 fahrenheit respectively.

That ECS kit is a very generic kit that doesn’t have the RS4 in mind at all. It comes with an oil filter sandwich adapter…yeah, don’t think that’ll work with a cartridge type filter housing. Also that very same kit is sold across the A4, S4, RS4 lines. The only one it may actually work with is the A4.

Intercooler vs oil cooler… can someone explain to me the risks and benefits of one over the other. Or both together.

so with the out side tempeture at around 70/75 after the SC its been running a little but higher i would say around 215/219/222 and when pushed a bit i saw 238/242

I can’t say an exact number, but there is always a happy medium with oil temperature. It obviously isn’t good to run too hot, but you also shouldn’t cool the oil too much.

What is your concern Denis? 215/219/222 is hardly too high IMHO.

Do you want this as a protection? or has someone told you you’ll make more power?

as mentioned:

I just put the new Forge unit in my car because my stocker was leaking at the connection. I was going to use the upgraded JHM lines, but the stock cooler threads were stripped, so I went with the Forge because it was a complete package and way less expensive than a new stock cooler. My car does run better temps now, but it’s not a significant change, and weather sucks here anyway, and haven’t had a proper hot day to test it.

Regarding the ECS unit, for $247.00, I can’t imagine that ECS cooler comes with lines and everything as shown in the photos. Note that is says “for custom applications”.

And, regarding whether upgrading the cooler is worth it? As Komseh said, JHM said it makes no diff really. I communicated with them regarding a custom cooler for the RS since they have one for the supercharged S’s, but they said it wasn’t worth it.
I think I remember Koolaide once mentioning the unit gesTTalt posted above as being a critical piece, more so than the cooler itself. He should know more than anyone based on his environment and track time. He’ll have to chime in to confirm that though.

i would say just to protect the enhine a little more, and running a little cooler we could make some extra power !

I’ll just post my $.02 but most of you have already nailed it… That ECS kit is sh*t…the fittings are probably good, that’s about it.

A bigger core alone will reduce temps during all normal driving conditions, but not during extended track time, which is exactly where I wanted an improvement. As musanoadsaba mentioned…the key is in the oil block, and changing the actual flow path.

I’ve been working with aussiedan, giving him guidance on a solution but he’s busy and months away. Dan is also fully aware of what we need, but we both agree it’s for such a small audience of RS4 owners that it’s on the back burner. Which is fine, I’m cool with that…it’ll come to fruition eventually. If I get motivated and start bugging him, I could get the parts and fiddle with it, but honestly, I’m waiting for someone else to step up and do the heavy-lifting. I’m trying to put ITBs on my benz, which is what currently tickles my fancy.

Would you say the oil block is needed on even the S5 or would you consider this an RS4 only issue?

The S5 doesn’t have the external oil cooler like the RS4… Considering the lower redline it may not be as pronounced (I saw lower temps, like 240ish when shifting at 7k), but I don’t think the S5 has an oil temp gauge (correct me if I’m wrong), so it’s like the S4 in that you really don’t know what kind of oil temps you’re hitting…

The JHM oil cooler kit for the BHF would be perfect for S5 applications…assuming it has the same oil block. Essentially, the solution I’m proposing is blocking off the OEM oil cooler ports on the RS4 and using the JHM oil cooler block from the BHF w/an external thermostat (which I believe JHM includes).
