ECU and TCU screen shots & locations

In terms of tuning or identification of the ECU or TCU we will get asked “whats your box code?”

How do you know or how do you find your box code?

You can take out your ECU or TCU and get the part numbers and letters off it. Or you can take your vag-com (if you have one) And use that (vag-com) to help you identify what you have.

Here is a screen shot of what you can get with vag-com

If you look in the open space with the green letters/numbers. This is the information that Vag-com took out directly from your ECU or TCU. Look at the upper left box. It is labeled VAG Number This is your ECU or TCU part number.

The next box over is the component information. This will tell you more information about what the ECU or TCU is running. In this case its running a B7 Automatic S4.

Don’t feel left out if you don’t have a vag-com. You can locate and Identify your ECU and TCU bu just going and physically Taking them out of there location. You can see here this is a picture of the upper driver side location just under the windshield. You will notice there is no box cover on this picture. This is to show you want you actually looking for. The shinny area is the chastity belt that is located on the B6 S4’s. In the A% your ECU is on the top and your TCU is located just under the ECU

The Audi 2002+ A4 was the only car to have the ECU and TCU located in the upper fire wall on the driver side.

I think I’ve got some pictures that will help explain this more.

Your ECU will be on top, like so:

The TCU will be located right below it:

To remove the TCU you’ll need to undo its version of the chastity belt. Remove this bracket by pulling it towards the windshield/center of the car. It secures the harness to the TCU:

After you’ve got that, you’ll need to un-latch the other side of the TCU by angling it away from the harness:

.

Once you move the end of the TCU away enough the TCU will come out. This is what it will look like:

That should be enough to get everyone started on taking out their ECUs and TCUs. When removing the ECU from the car, start with the big harness first and then the small one. When installing the ECU back into the car start with the small harness then the large one.
