Hi All,

I’ve been fighting some issues over the past couple of years, and I’m finally ready to tackle them. I’ve documented a few things before, but I want to start fresh and get this fixed up.

Main issues:

  • ESP light makes it so we can’t drive our girl.
  • Airbag light.

Sub issues:

  • Passenger door stopped locking
  • Headlight error, lights no longer track
  • One backup sensor failed
  • Low oil dash notification
  • Low coolant dash notification (goes away after about 15 seconds of runtime)

For the ESP fault, this is the biggest cause of concern. The VCDS log (as posted below) says that there is an angle sensor 2 error for the TB. I have swapped the TB’s and got the same error for the same TB, so I’m 99% sure it’s wiring. I have also replaced the ends (and even twisted as per the Audi bulletin) with no success. I’ve pulled both ECU’s and have checked the contacts and looked for pinch or kinked wired in the harness between the firewall and the ECU’s. Where would other points of failure be for the harness? Anything else I can test before I start digging into copper?

Also, the ESP light resets if I unplug and re-plug the TB connectors. Just a pain to do if the engine is warm and it’s rainy outside.

The Air bag light appeared on the drive home after the Airbag recall was done. I got into it with the dealer because they said there was rodent damage to the wires, and wanted to pull the front end of the car apart on my dime. I had the tech show me and the service writer where the damage was and he couldn’t produce it, service writer still wanted to proceed even though there was no signs of the damage. VCDS says that both front crash sensors are bad. Possible, yes, probable, not really? Maybe a rodent did something in there, but when I the front off to replace the radiator I saw no damage to any wires up there. Is there a voltage I can test with my multi-meter?

The passenger door just started after we started driving the car again after she was sitting for a while. I think a new door module is probably needed. No big deal, not a deal breaker right now.

Headlight error is caused by bad wires, I need to take the time to open the headlight and replace all the cracked wires in there (both sides are equally bad…)

Backup sensor - VCDS reports a bad sensor, probably correct.

Low oil - I replaced the oil sensor once, error still persisted. I can replace it again, if that’s really the culprit.

Low coolant - replace the sensor and reservoir is my next task. Coolant is always perfect height, even after running.

Any help is gladly appreciated, and have beer and whiskey if you live in the PNW. I really miss driving this car, but I don’t want to feel that I can only safely drive 10 - 15 miles before something prevents me from going highway speeds.

Also, worth noting is that we disabled the tire pressure system, removed the fuse and re-coded from VCDS.

One last thing, is there a VCDS label file for these cars?

Removed all the modules that passed to save length.

Also, I replaced all the coil packs two years ago with ones from ECS, and I still get misfires sometimes when it’s cold outside.

Hey not sure if this is relevant but ever check the relays? My 5.2 had a flooded history since i got it from auction i took my a year of absolute hell to find out that literary every relay under the steering wheel was fried. So the car would stall after like 10 to 15 mins with esp fault or start acting up and i would turn it back on after and it would for some time and gradually got worse to the point to where it wouldn’t start at all sometimes. Might be worth a shot

I have had those as well.

ESP light would suddenly light up and car would go into limp mode when I did a hard acc.
Found out that TB connector was the issue. When it happened I had to disconnect/reconnect 3-4 times and it worked again for a couple of days.
When I took the time to thoroughly clean the connector it stopped and has not been an issue since… 1 year and counting.

Front crach sensors do fail. I have replaced one of them. Bought 2 just in case :wink:

The headlight issue I also currently have but I don’t see any cracked wires. Looking for a howto for this job. Please share if you have info on doing this :sweat_smile:

I have periodic sensor fails but I found out it’s the connector behind the bumper. It’s oxidation of the pins in my case.

My oil level sensor also failed. Bought an aftermarket sensor and it worked again.
I also have noticed that it’s quite important to have car reasonably level and check level when oil is at operating temp, 2 min. after engine stopped.
Otherwise level might not be correct.

I saw your post on relays when I was doing a search of the forums. I’ll re-read that again and try re-seating the relays this morning :crossed_fingers:

Thanks for the reply, I have a feeling that I might need to redo my connections again. The new connectors did help things for a bit, but then it started degrading again. Do you know of a good place to get connectors? I bought mine off of amazon, and the one thing I didn’t like about them was the wire size was all the same heavy gauge, instead of heavy gauge for the power and then light gauge for the signal, as per factory.

I’ll order a couple of impact sensors. I just thought it was weird that they both went at the same time?

The for the headlight, I posted a question and got a response. I figured I’d take over the dining room table for a week to get it all sorted out.

My driveway is on a slight incline, 16" rise to 10’ run, I guess it could cause the oil sensor to fault? But I still have the oil alert when I start the car from work as well and it’s a perfectly flat parking lot. I’ll check the oil after two minutes after driving, but I have a feeling it may be sensor or wire related. I still get the error after a oil change, and I know for sure the oil level is slightly higher than expected at that point.

The parking sensor, how hard is to to get to the connector?

One place to check for sure if you haven’t already is compartment under the ecus. There you’ll find the ecu power relay and big fuse prone to contact issues.

The box looked dry, but the relay was defiantly used. I cleaned the contacts but I have a new one on order from VW/Audi. Thanks for the reply!
