Electrical Splice Question

Hello all,

I have a question regarding a spliced power source.

I have something I want to install that needs power, but I need it to have power from the moment the ignition is turned on. Now, in say a pos 1998 Ford Exploder, I would splice straight into the ignition circuit so when the key is turned, there is power. My worry is that with all the crazy electronics, anti theft, and yada yada, I really don’t want to splice into this cars ignition.
(unless I really do have nothing to worry about but good luck convincing me that  )

So my question is what would be a different power source that is hot from ignition on to ignition off. I was originally going to use the strip DRLs but soon realized those turn off when the headlights are on (Bummer because I wish they stayed on permanently)
I also thought about the power to the DVD player for the NAV, not sure if that’s a brilliant idea or idiotic.

Anybody have any other ideas?

Thanks

(PS this item I’m installing uses such a small amount of power it’s negligible)

ok I would have to pull the kick panel under the steering wheel. But there is a power strip under the dash with pick ups on it. If you pull the panel look on the back fire wall look for block 75 that is key on power.

I know this was a crappy explination but on the 2000-2006 cars that is active and always the way to do it. the ghetto way to do it if that won’t work is to look at the fuse panel and follow the fuses for key on electronics and from there tap into those leads.

Sorry this kinda sucked but if you pull the kick panel it should make more sense.

Thanks for that quick reply. I’ll take a look at that when I get home.

For my air suspension ignition trigger and remote turn on for an amp, I ran wire all the way to the fuse panel on passenger front side, and you can connect to fuse 12 on brown socket which should be empty. I used a “add a fuse” connector to make it cleaner.

Any pix as reference

I’ll take one tonight and post.

Always helpful. I know lots of guys have had this question and since I don’t have an S6 in my drive way and its just too cold to go out side. Its good to have you here.

Thanks for the help so far guys. I like the idea of the add a fuse. I’m gonna add a quick follow up question. I need to run this power from the cabin to inside the engine bay.
Is there an easy access way to get a wire through the firewall? Or am I really going to have to be creative to get power from inside to the bay?

didn’t get around to it yesterday, but will tonight… It’s definitely colder here, -21C this morning and dropping to -27C tonight.

I haven’t thought of that yet myself but it’s on my list of things to do. I wanna run a water/meth injection system at some point so I’ll have to come up with a plan at some point.

I will guess that the traditional route through the firewall will be a perilous journey at best.

What is being installed? how much of a current will it draw?

There’s a multitude of leads that are energized by the ignition circuit that you could run to a relay if there was a larger current draw.

It will use very little current. Basically negligible if I was to tap a circuit. What it is is a secret until I get it installed.
I can post pics once it’s all said and done.

I was hoping to use an add a fuse in the passenger fuse panel but if the firewall is that big a bi*ch to go through, I’ll end up taping something under the hood.

For those who were curious.

I used an add a fuse on the drivers side and added into the anti-dazzle rear view mirror. Comes on and off with the ignition perfectly. I ran the wire through the door jam and into the hood. Not the perfect solution but will work until summer when I can potentially do a proper install through the firewall.

So here’s what the fuss was all about. Some will love it and some will definitely hate it. I love it ;D

Oh I hear you. I haven’t updated my motor parts thread as its just too cold to go out in the garage. ITs been -20 here as well.

That looks great. Very neat. There should also be a key on sorce under the hood there as well that you can tap into. MAybe consider the head lights or the daytime running light power or the fog lights.

There is a good access under the dash to the engine bay. As you mentioned when the weather breaks it will be easy to get in there. When you do the carbon clean you will have the intake off and with that off you will be able to see a lot more.
