Hi i need new cam chains in my engien : the question is whether to change berings and piston rings in the engine ? I have refurdished the cylinder head with new spark plugs and injection i have also machined the cylinder head . Is there anything else i should do now when the engine is out of the car ?
just wondering, how do you know you need new chains? cam to crank relation in channel 93 and 94 over 6 degrees?
how many miles on the engine?
Regarding rebuild, before its apart do a compression and leak down test. If good, I wouldnt even bother tearing down the short block. Before you change your oil send a sample to blackstone. They will tell you if you have any wear materials and what they are from.
However if you are so inclined, rather than just changing bearings and pistons, tear it down, clean it, inspect it, then measure everything and compare to FSM specs. If in spec range, put it back together (with new bolts), and feel happy you didnt have to spend money unnecessarily and you have a blueprinted engine that you know every spec of.
While in there…any rubber O ring or gasket you can find-change it. Its not if, but when they will leak.
The car has been driven 119303 miles when the car is started it’s loud from the chains
Why did you machine the heads? Were they warped and out of spec?
Have you had this car a while and it has recently started doing this? What is the temperature where you are when this happens? Are you running the correct grade of oil?
Are you sure it is a chain noise and not a lifter noise? I would be looking at tensioners before chains.
^ this, the tensioners can fail causing them to bleed down and rattle before oil supply reaches them.
Check the cam and crank relative relation in VCDS to verify if chains are stretched. may not need chains just a tensioner or two.
Of course some people like to change everything while they are in there even if its still good, thats up to you.
