Extended Warranty Thoughts...

I recently picked up a 2010 S4 DSG with about 40k on the clock. I asked for a quote on an extended warranty and that was priced at $3,000 to cover the car until 75k mi.

Does this seem like a decent deal?

I have to put 10% down plus tax but an fully covered once that is down and while I pay the rest off interest free, if I choose to go that route. There is a $200 deductible on all repairs covered under warranty.

Given what we’ve seen on the failure rate of the dsg I’d say an extended warranty is a must. The deductible seems a bit higher than what I’ve seen. See if you can get the service history on the car. That’ll help let you know if the usual suspects have already been addressed.

Any plans for the car? Or just keeping it stock?

Thanks for the feedback.

I have the carfax and it looks like the water pump has been addressed but everything else on it looks like regular scheduled maintenance.

I’d really like to chip it but I’m hesitant because of the DSG really… I love the car and it’s a blast but can’t image paying for a new trans after getting denied a warranty claim for a $1500 tune.

DSG repair costs will go way down in the near future. Parts are starting to come out now, and there will be many options beyond replacing the entire trans/mechatronics. The mechatronics parts are already down in the $1k range, and the DSG as a whole will have repair parts available shortly.

I think it comes down to how risk adverse you are to big repair bills. I personally wouldn’t go the extended warranty route do to mods, and also the fact that I would be willing to handle a large repair bill (wouldn’t be happy about it, but I could do it no problem).

Look to see if they refund any of the cost if you never use it. Some warranties will refund some of the cost if you never use it. Some warranties are so hard to tell if they will be good. What I did back in the day was I set aside all the payments I would have made to the warranty and used it when needed. It’s a gamble but 3000 is a lot of money if you set that aside yourself that should cover most of what might ever break.

Interesting point and I guess I just didn’t know about the prices coming down. I’ve just heard the few horror stories here and there. Overall I think this is a very strong platform but I just worry.

Good call, I will check to see.

Definitely avoid the warranty if you have any intention of modding. Otherwise you’d literally be throwing your money away.

How prevalent is the DSG failure deal? I’m not on the AZ b8 section ever, just over here. But I hadn’t heard talk of it.

20 percent or 30 have some kind of problem. But may not be big enough for a 3 thousand dollar warranty…

Don’t know how this poll ended up. This was the basis for my concern.

I have 77k on my car. So far I’ve only had replace both front wheel bearings at around 60k and I did the coils packs with the sparkplugs. Assuming the DSG holds I don’t think its worth it. These engines seem to be holding up pretty damn good.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I still have some time to think on it but I’m now leaning towards not getting the warranty and having some fun with the car.

I will probably hate myself I owned a B8 and didn’t get the roc-euro intake and a tune. I get all excited just thinking about it!

Hard to justify an aftermarket warranty in any scenario. Insurance, yes, but for something that you can cover out of pocket…I’d save my money. You’re also assuming they’ll be easy to work with, and replace broken shit with new OEM parts. If you plan to mod anything I’d pass.

You are making the right move by not doing it IMO. I went with a 3rd party warranty to 75k miles that was recommended by my dealership after I decided to buy the lease out. When the time came for a mech unit repair I was left to pay it out of pocket, damn warranty company says they don’t cover that kind of repair! I asked them what the purpose of me buying a warranty through them in the first place was and they said if the entire transmission failed then you would be covered. Waste of money… If something else goes wrong I’m going to see to it that those scumbags pay for every last penny of it, hoping its something pricey too. This is the company: http://www.continentalwarranty.org avoid them lol

Sorry to hear that happened to you, but that you for the feedback. If you don’t mind me asking how much was the mech unit cost repaired?

The warranty I’m looking at is CNA National Warranty.

From what I have read, the mech unit is the part that breaks and not so much the actual trans.

Right, the don’t replace the mech units anymore but rather do a repair of it as a part of their new protocol. I’m guessing they implemented this new method of repair since they were tired of replacing mech units left and right… It costed me just over 1200 for the repair. Seems to be working pretty well 5k miles after the repair

Thanks for the info! This means DSG owners aren’t facing a bare minimum of 4k for a mech unit, which I was under the impression was the default charge for that kind of repair due to the historical claims.

That’s really frustrating to hear that you’d be left paying for a repair even after you paid for extended coverage. The positive news is the abilities of the dealership to now repair rather then replace a damaged transmission.
