Facelift C6.5 Rear Retrofit

I’ve finally come around to consolidating the information the facelift rear isn’t hard at all. Its rather very easy. I had issues with the lighting only to find out that i was using EU light with a US comfort module and coding. It doesn’t work the instructions currently found at Motortalk.de are for EU cars. I translated those and transposed them for the US versions of the car. I’ll provide pictures. I ordered all my parts ironically from a junkyard. Bumper, Trunk with inner light and comfort module included, and got the outside lights from Amazon. I reused all screws from my car. Ill draw up a diagram with the information from both the EU and US wiring diagrams later. You’ll have to connect the wires from the inner taillight. If you’re able to source the trunk lid from a junkyard make sure you get a S-line or S6 bumper as it has a natural ridge line if you have an S6. Also the A6 vs S-line bumpers are different and the diffuser connections are different as well.

Here’s the original link in German w pics:

I combined those with these instructions from OEMplus to make the install go well with the added innerlights:

Summary:

  • Tailgate (s-line = S6)
  • Diffuser (s6 or s-line)
  • Screen Cover (only for s-line)
  • Facelift shock (you can buy only as sline)
  • Rear interior trim
  • Tail Lights 2 Outdoor
  • 2 inner taillights
  • Harness of inner taillights or
  • Plethora of different pins with wires. (This is to create your own hardness)
  • Backup Camera and Harness ( If you dont already have one)
  • Comfort Module

Part Numbers for Install

  • Backup
    5A big pin 4
  • Comfort Module
4F0907289 with at least N or M Index
  • Limo Rear bumper:
    4F5 807 303 F = for cars without PDC
    4F5 807 303 G = for cars with PDC
  • Decorative strip for Limo:
    4F5 807 443 A 2ZZ = chrome
    4F5 807 443 D = GRU for Black Line Package
  • Diffuser S6 FL:
4F0 807 521 = for vehicles without towbar (for cars with AHK please adjust)
  • Hood for diffuser S6 in aluminum matt:
    4F0 807 791
  • Diffuser S-Line fits both variants:
    4F0 807 521 C = without AHK (so that the grid recess)
    4F0 807 521 b = with AHK
  • Grille insert diffuser S-Line:
    4F0 807 833
  • Trunk lid S-Line:
    4F5 827 023 S or
  • Trunk lid normal:
    4F5 827 023 AB, which I have unfortunately.
  • Covering trunk lid:
    4F5 867 975 M or L
  • LED Tail Lights:
    4F5 945 095 J = left outside
    4F5 945 096 J = right outside
    4F5 945 093 E = left inside
    4F5 945 094 E = right inside
  • Rear lights outside plug:
    8D0973734 x2
  • Rear lights inside connector:
    3B0972722 x2
  • Rear lights inside Pins:
000979021E x4, as the line reaches a 0.35, and does not have to be 0.5 or even 1.0.

You’ll have to adjust the trunk so that the lights line up mine are off by like .5 cm, not much. All measurements are in metric. Good Luck! It was a lot easier to do once i understood the german translation and got the RIGHT lights. On that note if anyone needs the EU lights let me know! CHEERs

Black this sounds like a really neat project do you have any before and after pictures. That would be really cool.

Very cool!

Looking forward to pics!

I recommend tracing the wires to the comfort control module and paying attention to which wires are in the connectors of the blue and brown connector on the comfort control module and then matching up with the main hardness on the rear tail lights, once that is done then depin the brown and blue or cut the wires each and solder or crimp connect the wires for the outer tail lights. Make sure you align the trunk because i didnt do that. All in all the only wire that doesnt make sense in the connection is the rear side lights but those can be disabled in Vagcom by coding as european they dont have rear sidelights. Other than that it was a painless and easy install that i did solely by myself without the help of anyone else.

Once again trace the lights to the colors additionally on the left tail light there are two blue/red wires i also had to play with this one to find out which wire was the right blue/red wire. Once done all worked correct if you chose the wrong blue red wire a fourth of the tailight will work for signal otherwise everything else will work properly.

Wow that was great work and it looks very factory. Usually when people try this stuff you can clearly tell the difference even if they use OEM parts.

If you don’t mind. About how much is something like this to do cost wise

475 for the S6 trunk with the inner tailights already implemented this also included the rear camera as well and rear control module. You can do this without the rear control module but i wanted everything to look and perform like its factory.

142 for each outer taillight which was 250.00 roughly after shipping.

350.00 for the rear bumper from a non-sline A6

So total a little over 1000.00 which i think you can get a lot of it for a lot cheaper now from different places.

are the outer tail lights a direct replacement? I like them better than the pre-facelift, but don’t want to swap trunks…

Yea I am a fan of without the trunk swap. Glad this is easier than it first looked though gives people’s options. Thanks BlackS6 for the great write-up and pictures.

No their not you’ll have to trunk swap in order for it to work

why would I have to swap trunks to get the outer tail lights to fit??

Have to wait on the professional response, but in looking at the pics the outer refresh does not seem to seat flush with the first gen trunk. Just a hunch though.

The outter tail lights shouldnt be an issue but the new gen tail lights are part of the trunk as seen in the picture above

FWIW. I’m looking at the pics and it seems to me the outer tail lights on the facelift are not as tall. I’m guessing the rear bumper is taller on the facelift to match. And that bumper fits a trunk that is flat across the bottom.

aahhh - that makes sense. I had to replace the bumper cover and a tail light - maybe I should’ve looked for a facelift cover. $140 for the tail and $135 for the cover unpainted - I’m not mad. Something for the future though maybe to change it up a bit.

unrelated; it’s CRAZY how expensive the headlights are compared to the tails. Dern AFS complexness
