Had to look up some of these acronyms! From various sources. Let me know if there is anything incorrect here…
ESP - Bosch GmbH 8.0 Electronic Stability Program 8.0. Electronic Stability identifies the car’s intended direction and response. It applies the brakes on individual wheels, thereby generating one-sided forces that help to keep the car moving in the desired direction. Another feature of the ESP 8.0 is ‘disc wiping’, whereby in wet weather the ESP system momentarily applies the brakes at regular intervals. This removes water from the disc and pad surfaces, and helps to maintain the braking performance of dry weather.
ABS - duh.
EBD - Electronic Brake-force Distribution. EBD ensures maximum braking performance at the front and rear wheels, and under normal conditions it prevents the rear-end from braking away because of over-braking. The system also counteracts “fading” as a result of overheating.
HBA - Hydraulic Brake Assist. The Brake Assist system helps in an emergency braking situation when the driver can’t push the brake pedal hard enough. A sensor recognizes the attempt at full braking and transmits the signal calling for full brake pressure from the hydraulic booster.
ASR - Anti Slip Regulation is Audi’s name for Traction Control System. ASR only operates in conjunction with the Electronic Accelerator (E gas) and uses components of the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS). If one wheel suddenly begins to rotate faster than the others (slip), ASR intervenes in the engine management system and reduces power until the wheel stops spinning. ASR activation is indicated by a flashing light in the instrument cluster; it works with the electronic differential lock (EDL) and it is also part of the Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP). ASR can be deactivated with the ESP switch.
EDL - Electronic Differential Lock. If a wheel starts to spin, EDL brakes it as necessary so that power is transmitted to the wheel with the better traction. EDL reduces tire wear and works up to about 25 mph (quattro: up to about 50 mph). EDL is part of the Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) and the Traction control (ASR).
