I did it on my old B7 S4. It was very easy.
It’s only logical that you take care of the simple things (regular maintenance) before you go throwing performance parts at a car. If people don’t get that then they should stick to driving a Prius or Kia.
It’s good to see we are establishing a trend for others to see, this way the idiots spreading “issues” with the tune will be muzzled,
We need an idiot list, and an explanation of why people need to take their comments about particular companies with a grain of salt.
If it were only that easy.
-
Many owners practice only reactive/unplanned maintenance. In other words, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Some are well meaning yet ignorant, some are negligent, and some are a complete waste of oxygen.
-
The vast majority of owners don’t have a technical understanding of how the system that they are modifying actually works.
-
An even greater majority of people take no accountability for their actions, and prefer to live as a perpetual victim.
Combine 1, 2 and 3 with modifying a vehicle for performance purposes and what do you get?

Remember guys, always use candle light when changing fuel filters. 8)
You guys have me worried… all this talk about stock engines grenading…
My warranty ran out in Jan this year. Eeek. :’(
And to think, I used to complain about having to change the timing belt on my 4.2s. LOL. I’m sticking with the belt driven 4.2s forever.
I had a convo with my Audi mechanic this week and he says yes, there are problems with the B7 RS4 timing chains - but he wasn’t too specific and to be honest, he probably sees 2 or 3 RS4 per year, so maybe he was basing his experience on the S4.
To replace the chains he says are $5,000 CDN.
But when I read through all the Audi sites, I only see talk about the S4’s - the RS4’s don’t seem to be as prone to the same failures.
I think I hear some chain rattle on my car but I wondering if it’s normal. I owned 2 Nissan VQ35 engines (with chains) before and they were much quieter than the Audi 4.2. Maybe I’m just being paranoid…
Thoughts?
I don’t think there are enough RS4’s that are high mileage to give us enough data as to whether or not they suffer from the same consistent chain/guide issues as the S4.
Have we seen any 2007-2008 B7 S4s with Chain problems? Theyre the same age as RS4s.
Yea they still have the guide cracking issue
lots?
Jhm would know if the chains /guides are the same parts. So would anyone with Bentley
not as much as the b6 s4, but that could be because the time/miles haven’t caught up with the 07-08 models just yet.
Over the last year the guide (never have seen the actual chain fail on these cars) failures are happening more frequently. Either that or more people are speaking up about it and not just taking it to the stealership.
Jesus, you going to have more Karma than I do posts!
Paranoid…
I wanted to update this thread and ask that some of the arguments maybe put into a separate thread.
Since my last update there have been more findings that support the start of the thread. One of the issues was linked to bad cylinder heads. I can’t edit the original thread so If I could get some help updating that please.
Here is another one.
I purchased a 2007 RS4 at the end of 2006 with only 21 miles from the factory. Mostly highway driven since then. Never had a CEL. I’ve gone through multiple sets of tires and pads. PS2s lasted about 30k per set to give you an idea of my driving habits. Averaged up to 420mi per full tank when cruising on the highway during my peak driving. The car has been amazing but started making a loud clicking/rattle last week. I was able to drive it home about 100 yards after the noise started and towed it to the dealership. Apparently there is metal in the oil and likely something broke off inside (cylinder head?) and has caused some damage. Estimated at 12K for used engine (none found yet) and 22k for new one. The value of the car is probably 13k at best RUNNING.
and then another one. This is from a shop.
Had one over the summer with same issues. Numerous things failed, rocker arms, main bearing etc.
It’s unfortunate. This one had 80k
I have found 5 dealer reports of cars coming in with a detonation issue. All 5 cars were 100% stock but having detonation or pinging issues. Each time a carbon clean was performed. I’m still working on getting more information together on this. If you or anyone see an issue like this feel free to post it here.

So, this thread has me feely a little queazy to stomach. Guess I will start a built motor fund for future engine replacement in the next several years, just in case.

I actually started working on this to try and show how great the rs4 motor is. And it is great the issue is there are some that didn’t understand that there are flaws and issues people need to know about and look for
