FAQ- RS4 Investigation

Are the typical factors hypothetically leading to failure? Lack of maintenance being the number one of those? Any common circumstances?

^ most commonly referenced hypothesis is cylinder scoring from carbon-related foreign object debris.

Wow. I don’t remember the carbon bits I pulled out hard enough to cause scoring. I would assume that any carbon that slips down sould be burnt off during the combustion cycle. Am I missing something?

I think it’s really just a very unlucky occurrence.

I actually started working on this to try and show how great the rs4 motor is. And it is great the issue is there are some that didn’t understand that there are flaws and issues people need to know about and look for

Just to add to the thread that my stock 07 RS4 has just started to ever so slingly ping on light throttle inputs when the engine is very heatsoaked. We’re just coming into summer here in the tropics, so performance engines tend to struggle at the best of times anyway. However, light detonation is surely a sign that even at max timing pull there is still too much heat/compression/timing/leanness combination.

For those that haven’t followed my other thread, I still don’t know if the car has ever had a carbon clean and it’s up to just under 160k kms (little over 100k miles).

I’ll do some more datalogging over christmas, and organise a carbon clean with datalogging straight after to get a feel for any differences.

Add one more guy to the list of stock rs4 cars that ping if they get too hot. As I said earlier in the thread I don’t think people know just how common this is on stock rs4 cars.

ive heard it myself. only for a split second when hard shifting into the next gear around 5500 rpm. and that one time I got a shitty tank of gas.

For us in the colder states the fuel can be hit or is depending on what season. Coming out of the winter months for whatever reason seems to be the times when gas quality is at the worst.

fuel companys change the additives in fuel 8 times a year for temp/season changes up here so the old winter gas isn’t quite ready for the changes in temp. the gas stations that sell gas a few cents cheaper are usually buying the leftover gas from the last change at a discount. that’s why the cheap stations like gto or beaver I will never fill up at. they also get more water coming from the bottom of tanks just from condensation accumulating inside. for me, even in a beater car youre better off paying a bit more for good fuel and honestly with our cars were talking a few dollars per tank for the “good stuff”

that’s because you soaked them in shit for 6 hrs first
