So, i have an opportunity to purchase a set of used FI catted DPs. It looks like the catalyst in each pipe is slightly damaged, like something impacted the cells. It’s a small area, but wondering if I buy them if it would be better to gut the cats.
X2 on gutting them. You never know when the material will start coming apart from whatever the cause of that damage was. If you don’t mind smell, gut them and go catless.
That price you mentioned is fantastic. It would be well worth it to get them even if you decide to replace the cats in them. With teh damage shown it would be smart to gut them as they will only start to further degrade
Received the pipes today. They’re in great shape, but the damaged areas in the cats is worse than I thought it would be from the pictures. The collapsed areas are about 1.5" deep into the metal.
I’m going to gut these, install O2 spacers, and see if I can stand the stench, and also pass emissions.
I figure I can always pull the pipes down in the future (not easy on the Tip car) and have new catalysts installed.
Fast Intentions quoted me $225 per pipe to replace the cats, which seems like a really fair price.
I notice they use the widely available Magnaflow spun converters.
I have the JHM tune but i also have the extended 02 sensors. Please for the love of god get the JHM tune when you install them. The car becomes so much more lively.
DPs installed. Where’s the power? My mid range torque is gone! They are super loud and raspy when I get on the gas (gutted the cats). Will installing new converters restore the torque?
This is normal if you dont have the JHM tune. Here is what happens. The dps allow the motor to move a little faster due to there being no restriction. Part of the motor moveing faster is that each rpm range is past by faster. BUT with the oem tune the car has to pull power out due to the stock limiter system. Most tunes dont adjust this but the JHM tune adjusts the limit system so that you can get the full power out of the car.
For several reasons it would be a good idea to consider getting the JHM tune. It will remove the Tq restriction that the OEM tune has in it and it will also help with the 02 code. Last part the car will sound different due to JHM making changes in the cam adjustment though the rev range
When you say cam adjustment through the rev range are you speaking of cam timing? Curious to know if they are the same. Mainly because the guy in this thread says JHM doesnt change the cam timing. If its the same then someone is wrong (i would assume its him). If they are different would you mind explaining the differences to me.
I dont read AZ much anymore for reasons like that. You have a guy with a clear axe to grind and then he is telling people about JHM products… I think its clear he is a troll trying to push his own thoughts because he feels he is somehow owed something. Its funny this is like everyother troll thread where someone that is making something that is mad at JHM becuacse JHM didnt come and give them a back massage tells people whatever they want and has to not worry about any real fact checking.
Most of us have been part of what JHM has been doing since the beggining. Guys like that come and go and all of them make up whatever they have to along the way. Ill just leave it at that.
