FedEx always brings the coolest toys

Just got another package, only waiting on one more and I’ll be happy!

Package 1:
GT2 rear wing (at paint shop now, got for almost nothing so couldn’t pass up)

Package 2:
K16 7-blade hybrid turbos using the 68hta compressor. Each should be able to flow ~37 lbs/min or so.

Package 3:
Aquamist HFS-3 meth kit. Bought of off a RS6 forum, but currently should be in the process of shipping now.

Ordering injectors soon and then will start the install after that. Clutch won’t last long after the new power so gonna have to do that too, but hopefully I can get the tuning done and a little fun for a month or so before I replace that.

Sweeeeeet… I forget what car you got though?

Went over to a 996 turbo as my new toy car back in July I guess. I need to start a build thread somewhere but haven’t gotten around to it.

“K16” is the stock turbo for the non-S model. The S model/x50pkg/GT2 came with what are called K24’s. Basically the ko3 and ko4 comparing to B5 S4 & RS4. So these have had the original compressor wheel swapped with 7-blade billet compressor wheels out of the Alpha A28 stuffed into the original K16 housing (and upgraded wastegate). They’d flow a good bit more if they were in the K24 housing, but you need to spend another $1500 to buy used k24’s and then pay to have them installed in there as well, vs most people just go to the A28’s. I got these on the cheap and got to keep my oem k16’s, so win win.

Plan was to not mod it for a little while, but that didn’t last very long. I had Count get me in touch with Todd @ Protomotive and I’ve been very impressed so far with them. I offered to let Count or JHM have the car for a couple of months if they had any desire to get into the porsche world, but their plate is more than full as it is. However, when I started reading some of the porsche forums, and started watching some of the classifieds, so many guys are going for more power, or just changing up kits that they dump their old stuff for pennies on the dollar.

The turbos came from a guy who put them on a month ago who was aiming for 550whp/600wtq (which they’ll certainly do), and now has a set of alphas that he’s going for 700+whp to hold him over till he builds the motor next summer and goes for 1xxxwhp lol. I enjoy letting other people take the hit and pick up parts like that! The good thing is, with it being a the porsche having a 3.6L motor, it can spool decent turbos up pretty quickly. And the big boys bore them out to 3.8L or 4.0L when they start hunting for crazy power. A lot of the B5 problems with bigger turbos is not having the flow to feed them (thus the 3.0L build), thus why one of the best overall real world performer was the k04’s.

Guys with these turbos have run 11.1-11.4 @ 125+ pretty consistently on 93 without any crazy tuning or ridiculous bolt ons. So it should be fun and shock a couple people who think its a stockish old turbo that doesn’t have much go anymore.

Wish I could say it is as fast as an APR S8 though =/

Wow! I must have missed that thread in July! Love it and I had no idea there was such a large after market for these cars. I figured most doctors get them and keep them stock; at least that is what all of my friends have done

A nice set of wheels will really set it off!

Just looked into the APR S8… :o holy fuck! However you are still you are right there on its coat tails

Definitely keep us updated!

Yea I dunno if I made much of a thread yet. Like I said, I’ll get around to making a build thread, b/c I’ve done a fair bit so far, but mostly little things or maintenance (997 GT3 shifter; wrapped 75% of wood in alcantra; replaced stock nav with ipad mini 4g, speakers, and amp; catless fabspeed 2.75" exhaust, spark plugs, boost hoses, new DV’s).

Yea the aftermarket scene is weird. Most of it is pretty pathetic, but then there are also some ridiculous builds. the 996’s have been doing 60-130 in mid 4’s for about 5 or 6 years now though. I’m not a fan of the 60-130 test, but fuck that is moving!

It’s a lot of the same issues the B5 had in the tuning world. It’s a very easy motor to get quick gains out of, so a lot of cookie cutter tunes and exhuasts, but not a lot of GOOD products out there. But everyone will sell you a tune, and make good money off ya. Search youtube for “protomotive porsche” and you’ll see what type work they do. Most of their stuff is $50+k builds going for 1xxx-2xxxhp. So they obviously know their shit, but I’ve been impressed how nice Todd has treated me even though I told him my max goals were in the 600/600 realm and over the course of a couple of years.

Anyhow, most the porsche is just overpriced junk. It’s amazing, it’s almost a bragging right to say you spent the most lol. The most comical is the straight back catless test pipes. I.e. 2 pipes, 2 flanges, and tips going straight from the turbos to the bumper (~2.5ft). You can’t find them for under a grand new, sometimes closer to $2k. . . like wtf??? Then you can find some "catback exhausts for close to $10k new. . . like literally 5ft of piping per side max and some mufflers. . . But as the cars are becoming more affordable, and guys from M5’s/S4’s/etc move into them, more “stage” builds are starting to happen and real numbers being questions. A lot of 996 guys take their car to the track too (well both tracks) so it’s good to validate the data that way. It used to be more of, I shipped my car to xyz, which is what the 997 market is right now. When you can afford $150k sticker as a toy car, you probably don’t care much about doing things in $1500 increments when you could just do it all at once.

But the motor that is in the 996 turbo is actually one of the best motors porsche ever made. It basically was used from the late 80’s to almost 2000 in their GT1 race car. Irony was, Porsche was almost broke, so instead of developing a cheaper motor, it seemed easier to use that motor as it was proven and they already had it. Win for the customer down the road, b/c 600whp is nothing for it. Ya gotta be a bit more careful with the torque unless you do rods, but there are some guys even at 700whp on stock motor.

Anyhow, the mod scene is coming around for it, but never will compare to BMW or Audi etc. That’s why I would have loved JHM to get in on it since it is a VAG car. Tune, exhaust, and billets or bolt on upgraded turbos, and the car will respond very very well.

Also, I’m torn on the wheels. I really like the classic look of the porsche twist wheels, but I have the non-“hollow” wheels, and apparently the rears weigh in at ~30lbs per wheel lol. It’d be nice to shave some rotational mass there for sure.

yea 996 is an odd duck. Good that you were pointed to a solid company for them. There’s a shop local to me that does amazing things with porches (and audis lol). If things don’t go through with promotive for some reason I can refer you to them.

IIRC the K24 is also used in the RS2 I5 20v engine.

Love the twists, classic wheels IMO but didn’t realise they were that heavy!
