Thanks for the responses so far. In the time since I made this post I have driven a few cars just to try and get my head around the idea of selling the beast. In no specific order:
2014 320i Manual w/ M Performance trim package, 60k miles on it, dealer asking 16k.
- The owner was a smoker and also the interior of the car was really trashed. Who treats their car like this? That’s a side story really. This car feels less like a BMW than any other BMW I’ve driven, maybe due to the lawnmower engine.
2011 328i Manual, 52k miles dealer asking 12.9k
- This car was perfectly fine, but just so underwhelming compared to the S6. It checks the boxes for less $ to run and maintain but besides generally driving nice, it just has nothing on the tuned V10 power matched to the executive interior of the S6.
2015 335xi M Sport, 45k miles dealer asking 28k
- Obviously the best of the bunch but somehow I feel that something is missing in the newer 3 series BMW’s. It just wasn’t ‘special’ and when I left and got back in the S6 I was happier on the ride home than I was on the test drive.
The one dealer offered me 16k cash to just buy my S6 outright, maybe a bit better on a trade. He drove the car and came out smiling, hinted at buying it and driving it himself for a bit before selling!
I’ve owned a few E46 M3’s but can’t go back to two doors with my kids at 7/11 right now. I think I was hoping that driving one of these cars would at least feel SOMETHING like the E46’s I’ve owned. But something is missing, maybe it’s all that HP. And then to get back into the S6 it’s obvious there really is a big gap in the overall package for the $ involved. I know I am not comparing apples to apples but at a base cost of entry, the S6 is in line with these and so many other cars that just aren’t equal.
So…now I am on the fence about selling it. Ultimately $ may dictate that it is necessary but it might be more of a sad day than I thought!
