Fenixgoon's car hunt thread

ok so I forgot to post the video to the link of how to look at the flaps.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIFddsRcMp4

Actually this is not that hard. Take off the top Y that has the two throttle bodys and put a mirror down in the intake you can cycle the flaps in vag com in the output test under engine output tests. Its a good way to help justify the price or help bring it down.

Compression test results:
Driver’s side: 180, 170, 175, 180, 180
Passenger side: 185, 170, 180, 170, 180

Well the 150k mile car fell through.

In the meantime, I’ve been talking on and off with a guy who has a very clean 73k mile 2007 with an ESC through November 2018. He’s asking 18k (which is not terribly unreasonable IMO). He may have a better offer in the pipe, so I’m still holding out on the buying end.

I also found this blue/white one on autotrader (https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?listingId=460468838).
The unique color set has me interested. The condition of the car isn’t what I’d consider to be well-known since it’s from a small place that’s going to routinely buy/sell/trade cars.

Outside of buying a car brand new from a relatively larger, MFR-named dealer, I don’t have any experience dealing with smaller, independent outfits. Thoughts on both cars?

Get PPI ON the blue one and go for that I think since the color is rare. That blue seems to be the crowd favorite.

150k mile car correct. The comp numbers seem a little low so maybe its best you passed. What year was this car?

WOW blue is a nice color and very rare. PPI is a good way to go if you can find a good company.

BUT IF YOUR GOING TO GET ANY USED AUDI GET A CAR FAX FIRST… From there post it here. If the car is at a dealer you should be able to have them send you one. There is tons and tons of good data hidden in some Carfax reports. It might give you some idea on what the car might have been through.

If it lived its entire life in FL that wouldn’t be a bad deal.

If you get the car for the lower price it can work well because you will want to spend the money to get a new intake, JHM intake spacers with injector clean flush and flow along with all the other maintenance work. So you are really spending the money anyway it just depends on how you spend it.

“color noted as black…”

Helpful. If you look at these car faxes and I have been searching for the right S6 as well so me and you are in the same boat here. You will notice a CONSTANT. Cars that get taken to the dealer ship for maintenance always get new injectors… injectors are such a big deal on these cars and they always seem to fail People who never took the car in for maintenance never see that. So so important.

Over all it looks ok. A comp test is always a great idea as it will show if the cylinders are hurt. 190 and above are a good healthy number

Bumpdate - several cars fell out of the running but new challengers approach!

2007, Red (god do I love red), 94k miles. 5 owners, northeast car, dealer claims it’s been maintained well but can’t/won’t release maintenance records (obviously you can’t send out personal info, but I was hoping a strictly maintenance-only version might be available). Carfax is clean, no takata airbag. Dealership shows tires, brake pads/rotors, and battery replaced. Overall condition appears to be good. Dealership quoting 16,750 OTD (not including tax since it’s an out-of-state purchase). Edmunds suggests a car of this vintage should be about 14.3 for a clean vehicle, while KBB gives 14.3-16.5.

2008, grey, 98k miles. 3 owners, FL/CA car. current owner indicates the vehicle has been well maintained. the intake manifold was replaced during a previous carbon clean, and the front bushings have also been replaced. brakes and tires replaced along with a more recent carbon clean. Also does not appear to have a takata airbag. Seller is asking 14k.

objectively, the grey car is probably the better vehicle, particularly given that it’s an FL/CA car. but good god do i love red. it stands out. i never have to worry about finding my current car in a parking lot (and i’ve never gotten in ticket to boot…knock on wood).

Thoughts?

The Air bag thing wouldn’t even be on the radar for me so that’s really a non issue

The grey car would be the better of the deals espically when you factor in the intake manifold. The overall weather the car was kept in really helps in less toll on the car and parts like suspension.

The red car could be worth it but factoring in the FL car has a new intake the red car to make sense would have to have a lot of maintenance work done and proof provided other wise your paying a lot of money extra just to have a red car.

I would just add that you should make sure you don’t have oil in the spark plug wells. It’s easy to have checked. But If you have a problem with the spark plug/ladder seals you are going to have to do an engine drop to replace them.
