Finished Up Carbon Clean and JHM Intake Spacers

Well everyone. I finished up my carbon clean and JHM intake spacers on my 2008 Audi S6 with 70.5K miles. Was not as bad as I was thinking, but it is a LOT of work. It was good to get in there under the manifold to see how the engine is put together. I also changed all the spark plugs which wasn’t too bad.

The hardest part was tightening the fuel lines near the firewall as you have almost no room and you have to do it with the intake manifold in place.

I am pretty sure that I will need to get a new intake manifold; I am not surprised at all. While there were no broken bits floating around in the manifold, I could hear the flaps in the intake rattling when I rev the car to 2000 RPM’s.

I wish I would have thought of it and gotten the gaskets and o-ring for the oil filter housing as I think it also may be seeping. Oh well, I’ll do that when I do the new manifold.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Should still drive better! Good work! Get the jhm tune now and of course the IM first if you need one

It definitely feels pep-ier. I just ordered the intake manifold. Will probably wait on the JHM tune for now but will get it later on.

you will love the tune. It transforms the car into a beast. a new intake will help as well. A good carbon clean is always a good idea.

NONE of your pictures are showing up for me. How bad was the carbon.

I will see if I can figure out what is going on with the pictures.

Carbon was very typical of this mileage. The intake runner walls had about 2 mm of carbon buildup as well as the inserts. The valves were the worst part; nearly everyone had a “ball” of carbon built up and located in the middle of the stem. I have no doubt it was significantly choking the airflow. The car definitely feels better and is much smoother on initial startup versus before.

Nice stuff - has anyone found a way to polish the back of the valves, maybe reduce the ability for stuff to build up??

I don’t think that would be possible without disassembly of the heads. And I don’t think it would help much.

The problem is the combination of the PCV system and and cylinder reversion; direct injection just makes things worse. Hot combustion gases will always back up into the intake when the intake valves open. This “cooks” any oil vapors and combines with soot and carbon in the combustion gas and sticks to the valves.

My plan once I install my new intake manifold is to run a can of CRC Intake Valve and Turbo cleaner every few thousand miles to prevent any buildup.

I don’t know why my pictures are not showing up. I also tried to upload pictures to this site but, it still shows no pictures as all when I go to my profile. I have tried two different browsers.

Here is a link to Google Photos Album with several pictures from my carbon clean and intake removal. Let me know if you can see them:
