…got about 4" of really dry snow last night. The drive in with the S6 was almost…cheating. Man this thing is good in the snow. TCS off - was a pretty terrible drive with all the nannys on. A complete joy once it’d do what I was telling it to do
4 inches is just about right. Its way fun to get to the fresh stuff that nobody has driven on. I think I already mentioned this but its worth another mention. Just keep in mind if you go too crazy doing donuts you can pop your PS return line and its not a fun fix.
When you turn off all of the electronic nanny systems with all that TQ the car really does dance. Funny to because its not a small car.
Need to find a winter driving school that’ll let me drive my car…
yeah, i can see how you could get into serious trouble in a hurry because it’s so easy to drive… Definitely feel all that weight drifting turns; drives totally different than the porsche in the snow! I still have no traction really; just fresh all seasons and it’s too cold to get any real traction. Only reason it’s going anywhere at all is the deep tread of new tires.
…The kid in me wants to just rip donuts all over the parking lot. The adult in me was satisfied with making a single loooooonng arc at almost full oppo.
Yeah I guess I need to start my recon work now to find proper parking lot options in advance. Definitely sounds like an entertaining time though.
the TC is definitly annoying and it feels counter intuitive.
It is pretty cool though when i do a sharp turn on slippery surface on purpose, it will understeer for a moment and then the abs kicks on and it hugs you around the corner.
with TC off and the 60/40 rear balance of the s8, i jsut feather the throttle and push the front end where i want it with the rear end.
LOL I hear you. The kids really know how to egg me on when it comes to dropping the go pedal and espically kicking up snow in a fresh parking lot.
had my first snow drive as well today… no sliding really after the first few minutes lol. ah well. maybe next time. performed beautifully…
These cars are built for snow! I’ve had a number of AWD cars in the past, but my S6 is by far the best at handling snow. Like you said, it almost feels like cheating.
Counter-intuitively, I like to put my car in S mode in the snow. Keeping the motor at higher revs seems to help with traction A LOT, in my experience. Remember, AWD is meaningless when the motor isn’t putting down torque. And of course leaving the TC on helps, Audi really nailed it with the Quattro and TC systems in the S6.
Yeah it is. In the really deep stuff the excessive heat from the engine bay is a nice assist as well plowing out of the driveway :-p
True… The biggest down fall for the Audi AWD system is summer race tires. Every year I wait too long before I swap into my winter tires. The summers dont like the cold and on the snow its like have 4 slicks. I just slide in whatever direction the grade of the road takes me.
