Follow up and review

Well a few months ago I posted this http://audirevolution.net/forum/index.php?topic=549.0 and I had no idea what was wrong with the car. So after posting here and on AZ, I got some ideas that either the mounts were shot or my dual mass flywheel was shot. After taking the car to two seperate Audi dealerships and one telling me the mounts were shot and the other saying they were fine. I started to research the dual mass flywheel symptoms and my car had most of them. So I began to save up and I ordered the Jhm stage 4 clutch and light weight flywheel, they were on back order so I finally got them last week. I took the car to a local aftermarket VW/Audi shop and they replaced the old with the new, and also I had a new 034 trans mount put in. When I picked the car up saturday I asked to see the old equipment and the flywheel was beat, the clutch was probably the width of a hair away from grinding the rivits. Also the throw out bearing had about a 1/4inch of play in it and had deep impressions from the pressure plate from being abused. So my first impression of the kit is that its great. The pedal feel isn’t too far off from stock, just a little bit stiffer and the release isn’t rough either. I was worried because the guys at the shop said its gonna be rough and that it was gonna be like an on and off switch for a clutch pedal, but its not like that at all its fairly smooth.

My shifts feel much smoother and more crisp and with the light weight flywheel the rpms climb smooth and much quciker. On sunday I drove the car from North Carolina to New York about a 600 mile trip , I didnt take the car above 3500rpms and it rode great. My overall impressions of the kit are that its great makes the car feel better than new, the only thing is at idle only when the clutch is engaged in neutral occasionally I will get a chatter. But thats only sometimes, also occasionally I will get the flywheel chatter in 2nd and 3rd around 1100-1300 rpms , but I know thats from me chugging the motor from being in too high of a gear at low speed. Something Ill have to get used to and keep the car in lower gears. But Im very anxious to break this in but Ill have to wait, Im playing it safe and starting the 750 mile break in period now and not counting any of the driving that I’ve already done to play it safe. Just thought I would follow up and let everyone know what the problem was so that if anyone has similar issues and dosent know what it is they can have an idea. Special thank to Jhm for making such a solid kit, keep up the good work!

Always great to see the followups.

If you can. Please post pictures. You can host them here. I would love to see pictures of the Flywheel and failed other components.

about how many miles were on the stock components?

I really wish I could take some pictures but I left the components at the shop that did the work to discard them, sorry!

But I got ahold of the service records and found that the dual mass flywheel had previously failed in this car at about 66k by the previous owner. It shows that the work was done by the dealership, I bought the car with about 82k and noticed an issue at about 85k. When the work was just done the car had about 97k.

just shows how shit that dual mass flywheel is. The dealership installed the B6 part again probably. That just meant the problem that came up at 66,000 miles came up again 20,000 miles later.

Glad to hear it all worked out. Next time you are in town, let me know and hopefully the timing will work out better.

The OEM flywheel for the 03/05.5 was very prone to fail. The good thing is you’re not going to have that issue again.

Definitely do the break in it will be well worth it.

Sorry I’ve been busy lately so haven’t been ableb to get on. Yea I’m glad to be done with the dual mass garbagr, so farthe break in is going great no problems! It just sucks not being able to have fun with it haha. Just the other day I installed some trexturk calesss down pipes that a got a month ago. It wasent to bad of a job other than the PITA axel sheilds, other than that everything was fine. Although I’m very confused I am now catless with no tune and have yet to get a CEL (knock on wood). I have checked the ecu and it has not been messed with so I’m a little dumbfounded that I have no cel, any ideas why?
Thanks, Nick!
