Yeah, here the tax isn’t even a consideration unless I buy from a dealer, with private sales there’s not even GST. So the cost in my case is potentially just the price differential which is pretty great. What would I get? A B7 S4 wouldn’t make much sense really; pay a bit more for a slightly newer car with limited differences only to find myself back in the same spot in a year or two. An RS4 is a good candidate but the differential there is $25-$30K, like wise with a B8 S4/S5. I’d have to have a lot of mods and a lot of repairs to get to $25-$30K.
I just bought a brand new fully kitted Durango R/T to haul the rug rats so my appetite for a new car for my DD is not great at this point (otherwise I’d be talking with Karsty) so my hand is called more or less.
I was shocked when I found out that you have to pay 13% tax even on private sales in Canada. The 94 S4 has changed hands 6-7 times. That’s a great money spinner. In the UK, you sell a car for GBP2000 and that’s it. You pay the guy the money, he keeps it you drive away, deal done. Admittedly, you’ll pay GBP100/year in “road tax” to keep the thing on the road including an annual safety/emissions, but that’s no different to e-testing here in Ontario.
As for buying from the dealer, the sticker price has to be what you pay to drive it off the forecourt, so taxes, PDI and delivery included.
as for road tax, 100 pounds = 160 CDN/USD…and it’s annual while our $35 fee is every 2 years isn’t it?
Now, do you have to pay a license fee for the car (sticker/tags whatever folks call it) on top of that? Because here we pay $74/year as you know. So really an older car is $92/year here (55 pounds sterling).
newer cars don’t have to deal with the emissions until they’re about 7 years old I think.
^^ That GBP100 is at the low end and is for everything, safety and emissions including the sticker, which is actually a disc in the windshield. It’s based on the CO2 output of the car. I imagine an RS4 would be around double that per year.
The annual safety was always a pain but meant you had to keep on top of maintenance. I remember my tyres were running low on tread and I had to get them changed, or no sticker. The 94 S4 I bought from Toronto came with tyres down to the bead and control arms nearly falling off.
Diesels are on a different scale. So say a 335d, you will pay less road tax than the equivalent petrol powered car (prob a 328i?). The high power diesels like the 335d or the 3.0TDI are great because you’ll pay less tax and insurance per year (as well as fuel) but still have a fun car to drive.
wholesale base $15,975
retail base $18,675
add for options…maybe $500
add for being low kms…$1850 (there’s a chart)
So $18325 wholesale and $21,025 retail.
If you’re not in the GTA, add 3% to that or so. Another 500-600 bucks. So trade in, I’d bet they offer $19,000 or thereabouts. Of course you never know right?
You had your engine replaced last year which to me would be a huge bonus, but to the average buyer is probably a bit scary…it reminds them that these cars potentially blow engines which for your average Honda or Acura buyer happens rarely. Also they may take that to mean you don’t take care of your cars, thus why would they want to buy it?
