Fuel filter replacement. With testing on a RS4

Maybe a DIY subsection within each platform would be good.

How often/mileage should the fuel filter be replaced?

Mine was replaced 2 years ago. Just curious.

The mileage that I read the most when searching is ~50,000 miles. Time doesn’t play a factor, as the filter material shouldn’t degrade.

There was lively debate on some forums regarding this “rule-of-thumb” mileage. Evidently fuel quality varies greatly, and the need to swap the filter is entirely dependent on where/what you fill up with.

That’s from Audi. They also recommend 55,000 miles for spark plugs…and that’s retarded. It’s just to keep it outside of Audicare.

Axel, I would do it every 2 years for low mileage, or every year for high mileage (15,000-20,000 miles per filter). I have one at home for a B7 S4. Check if you have a 3 line or 4 line filter.

I did the S4 filter every year along with plugs.

My mechanic says he’s pretty sure mine is a 3 line (from memory so not 100% sure).

that’s the newer one on most of the B7 S4s so that makes sense (although I think boraVR6 had a 4 line, B6 style)

DIY it in your garage spot. nice and warm, easy. Done in 15 minutes.

I may have told this story, but talk about dumb. When I changed mine on my B7 S4, I used a plastic basin to catch the fuel. Then I didn’t know what to do with the fuel that came out of the filter…about half a litre. So I had a brilliant idea…just light it on fire and burn it off. Someone said to me ‘moron…why didn’t you just pour it back into the car???’ (I didn’t think about that).

Apparently I didn’t think about the plastic basin melting either. It just flattened into a pool of melted plastic on my driveway from the heat of the gasoline burning off.

Haha. Sometimes the obvious path is ‘less fun’.

Though scraping smelly melted plastic off of the driveway isn’t my idea of fun either.

LOL at the pyromaniac…

I wouldn’t pour it back in, either. Too easy to get dirt from exterior of car and filter into the gas that came out.

The interval you are referring to are for both s4 and rs4 saki?

Yes. Same.
