Ghetto Seat Backs

So both of my seat backs have become detached and are just kind of hanging loose. The car has spent it’s entire life in summer climates, but has also been garaged for most of it’s life.

How do I fix this? I’ve tried multiple basic adhesive solutions: spray, super glue, and thin adhesive strips. They only work for a few days.

I asked a body shop and they said the entire seat back has to be replaced, which is a ridiculous cost.

3m molding tape looks like a good candidate. That stuff holds exterior pieces/badges on like a boss, should work well inside the car. Just ran the surfaces really well.

+1 that stuff sticks like snot to a screen door. the wife smashed her truck up last year and all the mounting points for the headlight are a mess so that’s whats literally holding her headlight in and has been since last Christmas.

Thanks guys, that seems like it will work. I ordered a 5’ roll, will update when I try it out.

Industrial Velcro of that doesn’t work. I use that for lots of stuff. Holds the cable box on the back of my lcd so it’s invisible. But the adhesive might be the weak link in your case. Sounds like the surface these adhesives are being applied to is the issue. Is it rough or something?

I would just use some very strong adhesive for that. If there is any pressure on the foam 3m stuff, the foam shears.

Maybe an epoxy made for plastic/vinyl? Or gorilla glue if you are careful

You can order the seat backs from recaro. I had this happen to mine. Audi fixed it under warranty when it was still under. I dont know the part number. Ill see if i cant dig through my reciepts and see if i can find it.

Fixed this exact same thing on someone’s car. Make sure to get the industrial 3m tape if you use it. I think it’s black.

Check the 3m web page for the proper stuff. You need to make sure you prepare the surface of the backing and the mounting point on the seat. After you did that real well you want to make sure you adjust the backing so its not out of the groove. For the next step I grabbed some of the kids playdo I put thin strips on the back of the seat to kinda mimic what the tape would do. I gently pushed the seat backing up and you can see how the playdo makes contact with the seat. This helps you place the tape better for full contact. After that push the backing on and mark where to put the strips. I found that really scuffing up both surfaces made for the best bond.

Before you put the tape down warm the tape up so it becomes more sticky. Also make sure you get a few things to keep pressure on the back of the seat while you wait for the bonding to take place between the tape and the seat.

Here is what I did there. I got a big tall and wide book a bath towel and two two by 4 boards. I put the towel around the book and placed it on the back part of the back seat. I then placed a small foot section of 2x4 on the back of the front seat directly on the other side of where the tape was. I then put a 2x4 between the book and the 2x4 on the seat and backed the front seat up until the 2x4 between the seats was putting pressure on the back of the seat. I did this just enough to hold pressure but not to over do it. I let that stay like that for about 45 min. Making sure it was hot in the car the hole time. After about 45 min put the seat back up and walla the seat back is back on and the tape bonded really well.

Just wanted to update this thread with my results…

I finally got around to fixing this permanently a few months ago. I used a few of justin’s suggestions and did it my own way on some of the steps.

I sandpapered off the old adhesive on both surfaces, cleaned the surfaces with rubbing alcohol, applied the adhesive tape, then put a few 2x4s with padding between the seats to apply pressure overnight.

The adhesive tape I used were the critical part imo. I tried a while back with the 3m molding tape and they fell off in a few weeks. This is the stuff to get: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004V40IUS

Thanks for the explanation Justin

Thanks for the update. This well help out lots of people living in the heat. I remember when i bought my car both my seats were doing this and the RS4 on the lot was the same.

weird. Never seen that before on any cars up here lol.

Gorilla Glue it foams and expands, grabs ahold of damn near everything.

I bought my car in Florida (was originally from California). I noticed mine and the RS4 seats did the same thing. My car at the time only had 22k miles on it and the RS4 had 42k on it. Must be something with the heat and humidity.

definitely. Germans may not have thought of 90+ for 365
