Harry's LapTimer Petrol-head Edition - Review

Ello Ladies and Gents,

Not sure if you saw my other post about video and audio recording setups inside (and outside) our cars. Anyways I always enjoy making videos, and wanted to do more of it so I started building my equipment list starting with beginner items (GoPros- Black (2), entry level external microphones and an iPhone).

Anyways I will focus on the iPhone and application portion of things first and update as I go along , first starting with only one device (Main iPhone 5), then going to two devices (picture in picture ability using two iphones connected via bluetooth) and then finally three cameras (Main front facing iPhone, second iPhone- Rear Facing and a GoPro on the outside).

I am still learning the ins and outs of the application so bare with me through the growing pains.

I decide on Harry’s Lap Timer Petrol-Head Edition ($19.99 in App store & Android), there is a Rookie Version ($8.99) and the Gran-Prix Edition ($27.99) You can go to the Apps website to learn what each version gets you feature wise. I decided on the Petrol Edition for the video overlay options, multicam and I can still update to the Gran-Prix Edition when I want to start using my GoPro and multicam options. Figure start in the middle and work my way up when I need to.

Here is the Apps website, guy owns a few porsches and of course is German

I havent taken it to the track just yet and with winter coming not sure if I will, but if I do again I will update this post. However I do have some decent roads in my area to cruise on so most of my “learning” and adjusting will be done on those roads.

Here is a short clip showing just what the basic set up does. Essentially you set up your profile - Driver Information, Car(s) information and choose your “Track.” Now in this instance I wasn’t on a track so I created a NEW track and saved it as Schaumburg (city I was in). It tracks the route via gps and saves it as a “track” so that you can pull it up later. This could be useful for your drive to/from work to see how quickly you get there each day (not necessarily for speeding but staying in the right lane as opposed to switching lanes) and will keep a log of your max speed, fastest “lap” and all other information. The application itself has a ton of tracks pre-loaded in (world wide) as well as options to download additional ones. You again can even create your own track if your local one isnt loaded (mostly for drag strips) and save it and publish it.

Here is a quick video of me leaving a store and getting on the highway, notice it tracked my GPS and loaded it as an overlay track once I was done:

Super easy to start and stop and if it was a continuos lap it auto resets the lap time automatically when you cross the start/finish line. You can read about a lot of the details on his website but just wanted to get this intro and update thread started with my first impressions. There is a lot inside this app, more than I need at the moment from a data standpoint. A lot of really cool graphs, accelerometer data, G data, braking and acceleration data; the list goes on and on…

Hope you guys enjoy this and more to come, any questions just ask. I will attach screen shots as well so you can see if it would be something you would be willing to pay for.

Cheers
