Headlight Issues

I’ve had the afs headlight warning on my car ever since I bought it a couple of years ago and finally decided to try to fix it. I could see a slightly frayed wire going to the motor on the old headlight and figured that was the cause. I bought a used left headlight (the only one that gives me an error when I scan it with my vcds), the “new” headlight I bought brought up the same error when I installed it:

02629 - Sensor for Swivel Module Position; Left
008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 00101000
Fault Priority: 2
Fault Frequency: 254
Reset counter: 40
Mileage: 207288 km
Time Indication: 0

Visually it looked fine, no damaged wires etc but it wasn’t working so I sent it back and picked up a set of afs headlights with the led day light running light strip from a guy with a 2009 A6. These headlights look brand new, the wires are look to be in perfect condition. When I installed these ones I got the same error on the left light as well as:

02769 - Headlight Swivel Module; Left
003 - Mechanical Failure - Intermittent
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 00100011
Fault Priority: 2
Fault Frequency: 4
Reset counter: 40

I find it hard to believe that I’ve had three different headlights all have the same error, what else could be causing this? I’ve tried swapping around the headlight control module between the headlights and that doesn’t seem to help. The plug looks visually fine, and all the wiring as far back as I can inspect it looks to be fine as well. I’m kind of at a loss on what to check next.

And the other issue is these new headlights are not bi-xenon, the main beam is xenon but the other light is a halogen as opposed to my original headlights. Is there a way to make these work correctly? My car was originally from the US so it has the LED daytime running lights in the bumper already (I was testing it with the bumper off so I’m not sure how that affects things) Anyone have any ideas of where to go next?

I think I had my terminology messed up with the new headlights, the main beams are xenon and that second bulb is a conventional halogen. I guess it turns on when cornering hard or something? I really don’t care if that works as long as the main beams work and don’t give me warnings lol. Is it possible to change the coding to make these work or is additional wiring required? Been searching around on line and it’s confusing as hell.

Tried switching the control units back and forth but I’m still getting the errors on the adaptive lights, plus I got a new one all of a sudden :frowning:

02233 - Left Headlight Power Output Stage (J667)
004 - No Signal/Communication - Intermittent
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 00100100
Fault Priority: 2
Fault Frequency: 1
Reset counter: 40
Mileage: 209864 km
Time Indication: 0

Is it possible that the control unit is going bad? I’m not sure what else could be causing these issues

For the new lights, the new main beams work and are definitely brighter than the old ones (and pointing straight ahead) the turn signals are all fine and the bright/diming switch works, I found this site (needs to be translated from German) that shows what you need to do as far as wiring and coding in order to make the errors go away - at least for rs6 headlights, from what I can tell they’re identical to what I have just with a few less led’s in the strip.

Seems relatively straight forward, I have the dash panel removed to access the module and ordered the pin/wire I need for the led light strip, I’m just going to hook that up to my daytime running light led strip in the bumper to power it. I’m thinking I’ll just try all of this and if I can’t get the damn afs to work I’ll just code it out unless someone else has an idea here

Update - if anyone cares lol - I was able to get them to work successfully (mostly) but it took a bit of messing around. The steps from the instructions above didn’t work and I had to put all my wiring under the dash back to the way it was which was a pain in the ass. I found the wiring diagrams online for the s6 and the a6 and was able to piece together how to switch the wiring around between the two except for the “fog/parking” light (the inner light). I ended up buying a new plug/pigtail to switch around the pins (which was from a dodge ram strangely enough) and was able to splice into the wiring for the daytime running light led strip my car came with to pins 10 and 12 so I basically have two led strips as my daytime running lights now. The only issue with that is, when I turn my car off the left led light in the headlight housing flickers but otherwise it works fine.

The other issue I came across was trying to figure out how to get my “fog/parking” light to fire up, there was no pin on the new headlight for me to connect to so I kept getting a bulb out error on the dash. Finally realized that the model I got the headlight from had that light illuminate when the adaptive lights are at full swing which my car doesn’t have, so to get around that I had to connect directly to the wire in the headlight housing and wire that to the plug - I believe it was pin 13 on my car

Hooked everything else up to the new pigtail connector

Took it for a spin and everything worked, it’s the first time since I bought this car that I didn’t have an error on the screen when I drove it, I didn’t realize it shows you what song you’re listening to on that screen lol

The adaptive lights were working this morning on my way into work until I almost arrived at the office when that damn error popped back up AGAIN, it seemed intermittent though, it would turn off and on. I’m still not sure what’s causing that, almost feels like a bad ground or something considering it’s not the headlights in this case. They’re nice to have but if this stupid error keeps popping up I may just disable it with my vcds. Might make sense that there is a bad ground on that side though considering that’s the same side that the led strip flickers when I turn the car off so it might be worth looking into I suppose, just don’t feel like pulling the damn bumper off again

Anyway if you are trying to connect 2009 A6 Canadian spec headlights to a 2008 S6 US spec car it can be done lol.
