Headlights (and fog lights)

Looking for someone to drop a knowledge bomb here. I’ve been looking for the answer on AZ but all the wrong info and opinions are clouding my judgement.

Headlights: I have the oem single xenon headlights, they are alright, but definitely not the best light output, I find them a bit lacking when dumping bodies on the side of a logging road. Are there any straightforward upgrades for the low beams, such as a new bulb or lens? There is an ongoing thread about lenses and whatnot, but it doesn’t appear to be very factual. the halogen highbeams work fine for me so I’ll leave them.

Foglights/drl’s: An upgrade here would probably be more for aesthetics, but I don’t want to compromise fog performance (those body dump logging roads get foggy this time of year) I know people do hid upgrades, or the really yellow bulbs. A local b8 guy did the yellow bulbs, I put my car beside his and we both turned our fogs on and his looked way better, brighter and more yellow.

Yeah I have the single Xenon’s and it was a little disappointing at first how much light was output. I have a dying bulb so that would affect the light. How old are the bulbs in car, maybe they are coming to the end of their life.

Have you seen this thread

Interesting idea that he has done

I have no idea how much light the Bi-Xenons put out, couldn’t comment if it would be worth the upgrade.

Speaking of lights… Can I adjust the vertical aim of the beam without throwing codes?

You can adjust the light in any direction, you just need to turn the adjusting nobs the right way. I grab a pic for you later.

Ok I appreciate that.

Yea I saw that thread, wasn’t that just for bixenon though? And I didn’t see anything there that improved the lowbeam output very much.

This is the air intake side, you need to turn the white bolt looking thing on the left (under the V in the AR watermark) to adjust the vertical level for low beam and the one on the right is for high beam. Same principle applies for the other side. You can use either a philips head screw driver or a allen key.

If you need any more pics let me know.

Also while I was poking around my headlights and after reading the 02 differences thread and found out that 02’s have D2S xenon bulbs, I pulled the bulbs and found that I had D2S. This made me annoyed with myself after reading everywhere that B6’s had D1S bulbs and purchasing a set of 6000K D1S bulbs. That will teach me for not looking before purchasing.

^Make sure you don’t crank them too far in one direction. I was adjusting mine and was too close to the wall so adjusted them too far. Started driving down the street and noticed so hopped out there to adjust. When you don’t have a wall to stare out it’s tough to tell which way they’re adjusting, then snap. . . too far and in trouble.

If you’re really interested in upgrading them, contact Fly300kts (“Phil” who makes the LED strips etc). He’s kinda the headlight guy, and who is repaired my light. It was a plastic adjustor that you couldn’t buy through Audi, but he sourced elsewhere. His prices aren’t that cheap, but there’s really no one else to do it or another good source of parts, so it’s kinda what ya gotta deal with.

^^^ That is something that you have to be careful of. My advice would be to find a a flat surface in front of a wall and then adjust

Wow I feel dumb… Thats pretty simple. Thank you.

Sorry for the late reply. With fam for the holidays and work… Happy New Year everyone.

no real help, but I really want to try and retrofit a set of adaptive bi-xenon’s from a B7… altho I’m assuming WAY to much work involved, I think it’d be pretty awesome!

whatever lights you want to try, maddog probably has tried them. Strike that…he probably has them currently running on his car.

While they are cool, def wouldn’t be with the headache even trying to get them to work. I have them, and I’d honestly rather have that DIY about the lens swap over the adaptive. I was actually going to have Phil do that for me as he mad a DIY for the B7’s, but it involved a lot more work = more money, and wasn’t worth the coin to pay him to do it, imo.

To me more light is always better. Plus, on tight back roads, the adaptives will turn enough to make you freak out for a second thinking that there’s an oncoming car when it’s really just you taking the corner hard.

Haha, quite true. But I’ve scaled back quite a bit.

On the car:
55w hella “driving lights” behind center grill (wired in as my fog lights, so no extra wiring or switch)
LED DRL’s (Phil’s - replaces DRL & City Lights features)
6k D1S main beam bulbs
CC mod with silver coated turn signals

Removed from car:
Headlight tint (being removed now)
H.I.D. fogs - Removed (due to DTM)
LED DRL - Removed (resistors and all)
LED City Light - Removed (resistors and all) - thus all the wire you saw is now gone as well
License plate lights (don’t work after resistor installed for backup camera haha)
All turn “reflectors” in bumpers have been shaved & filled as well

hmm… not sure what this lens swap you are talking about. My mom had 2 previous B7 A4’s, both with the adaptive bi-xenons and they were amazing! Compared to my auto-level single xenon’s, those were like night/day difference.
But yea, I’m sure the hassle of getting the wiring, correct modules, and any other nuances isn’t really worth the time and money for those headlights. And then to think I would want to rip apart a set of ecodes to do it in! ha!

^^

Hmm, so it looks like the upgraded clear lens is a pretty solid route for lowbeams
