Help needed for transmission fault codes

Hey guys need help on what these fault codes mean and what i need to do to fix it.
So im driving the car everything is ruining sweet as a nut im giving it some stick after just refueling and i go to over take a car get half way past him and BOOM !!! Everything cuts out on me no power at all i did see a flash on the dash saying gearbox malfuction, i cant get past the car ive tried to over take so try and slow down to get back on the right side of the road but i can not as the guy i tried to over take blocks me untill i come to a stop, so not good as now im on the wrong side of the road waiting for a head on !! Car won’t start at all then a car comes head on over the hill luckly his not going fast so manages to stop ! THANK F*#K for that. I try to start the car again and it starts  So i drove home and car run great no problems ?? conected the VCDS and this is what i found.

Had a mission getting these logs on here am rubbish with this sort of stuff lol so sorry if its not how it should be ! Thank in advance guys took car out last night again after clearing DTC’s and pushed it a bit and was perfect no issues ?? But i still want to know what the cause was and if i can resolve the issue as my trust in the car is not there after that !!

I’m curious if these are Stage2 tune related, this is the second thread on gearbox issues post stage2, the other thread was a C Fork issue.

Worth running the adaptation in VCDS to reset the parameters. I’m curious if the higher pressures and speed of operation after the tune is causing the travel limits to be exceeded therefore throwing up faults.
It may be that the VCDS adaptation will need to be run periodically to prevent these codes.

I know the R8 guys, with their tunes, had issues with trying to speed up the shifts and it caused premature fork wear. I also know the shifts in stage 2 aren’t really sped up much if at all. It just wasn’t possible.

Wondering if the Fork issue is only because the car was in gear when the “event” occurred. I’m thinking it’s more of an ECU/wiring harness event due to P150A and the multiple gateway codes which all point to electrical. P150A can be everything from a bad ECU to a poor electrical connection somewhere.

Just going to throw stuff up here as I come across it and it sets off a lightbulb… Looking at the first code, P1890, that can be caused when the main wiring harness plug for the transmission is compromised by fluid. It’s been a known issue on other Audis and the RS5’s service manual does mention possible contamination, especially when changing the transmission fluid. I have to go look at the FSM but some years have an issue like this. Be right back.

Page 196, some cars have a second temp sensor integrated into the MTF drain. I know mine does. Any fluid contamination when changing can damage the contacts long term and cause issues. I know there was another issue with the main wiring harness plug would not seal and also cause issues.

Convinced it’s electrical in nature. What sort of shape is your battery in?

Hi guys thank you for looking into this for me, my battery is in good shape its only about 6 months old as i changed it when i was have the issues with the hesitation i was getting when i first flashed the stage 2 tune ! Can i clean the temp sensor at all if it has one as I’ve never looked before ? Also where does the main wiring harness go from and to so i can look at this as well and what am i looking for on this ?

@JamesRS5 i come across the threads regarding the stage 2 and the c fork getting stuck as I’ve been digging around for answers to what has happened i will do the adaptation as well just to be on the safe side. Anything else you guys can think of doing or checking for please let me know ! Thank you again for this
Just thought i changed the cam sensors all 4 only the other day i dont suppose this is related ? Doubt it but worth mentioning !

The temp sensor is on the drain plug for the MTF fluid on the underside of the car. Check to make sure it’s clean and there’s no fluid on the plug or in the fitting itself.

Miraculously, I have a photo of it. Shocker, I know.

Not sure I have a photo of the main wiring harness plug. I’ve read of coolant actually wicking down inside the sheathing of wiring harnesses and causing issues with the transmission. Not necessarily with the RS5 but with other Audi vehicles.

Not the best photo but on the far right, the black piece, that’s the connector for the transmission’s main wiring harness. That’s the external trans filter to the left and the inspection port for the MTF as well. I know some earlier models, the inspection port WAS the main wiring harness port. You had to unscrew it or something stupid like that. Was the case on the early cars, not facelift.

Curious, did you code the new battery in using the VCDS?

If you look at the chronological order of failures:

15:23:18
18053 Shift fork 3
2937 Transmission control module

15:23:52
7969 - Signal Line for Tiptronic
8007 - No Communications with Steering Angle Sender (G85)
8015 - Steering Column Control Module

15:23:53
8463 - Supply Voltage: Terminal 15

15:23:55
9723 - Shift Lock Solenoid (N110)

15:24:28
7781 - Engine Off Timer Performance

The initial fault was with the shift fork and transmission control module, almost 30 seconds later the signal line for Tiptronic dropped.

The P150 was almost a minute later so whatever caused the cascade of faults looks to have started in the gearbox. Curious if you’ve got a solenoid going bad, you’ve had gearbox issues since January so this isn’t something new, it’s just something further towards failure.

Sounds like the transmission needs a full adaption test drive with the dealership scan tool Guided Fault Finding procedure and maybe even a fluid/filter change beforehand to adapt the values with fresh fluids for the best possible learning process.

The gear selector forks movement are a learned value because they are held in place by the solenoids and that shift fork 3 solenoid could slightly be out of alignment of the proper position. I have not had much luck with adapting these seven speed S-tronic transmissions by using the VCDS. Instead I found that to really get them to adapt smoothly it takes the dealership scan tool test plan to fully adapt everything.

From the account by SteveRS4 along with the faults and corresponding freeze frame data it appears to me that the most likely scenario is the following.

  1. That he mashed the accelerator pedal to 100% to pass/overtake.
  2. The shift fork 3 didn’t move quickly enough for the TCU to be happy with the engine revving up to its peak torque output of 536 Nm/395 ft-lbs. (that torque output is a reference based on an ECU calculation)
  3. The engine stalled because it was going to over-rev from the transmission not shifting correctly or potentially blow transmission pieces apart internally.
  4. Along with the TCU stopped communicating from trying to process multiple errors while having battery power cut off momentary.
  5. After a little bit of time with just ignition power on from SteveRS4 trying to restart the engine. The TCU was able to move the shift forks to a “reset point” where the ECU was given permission to safely restart the engine.
  6. The TCU then shifted mostly correctly on the light drive home but likely isn’t perfect.

If I were a tech at a dealership directed to diagnose this issue then I would go drive it again to see if I could reproduce the problem. By going out to an open stretch of road and floor the accelerator pedal to 100% requested acceleration from cruising in like 4th or 5th gear (in normal Drive mode). It seems like an intermittent problem that only appeared under the heaviest WOT downshift scenario and all of the codes were not confirmed so I don’t think that a sensor (like the selector sensor that commonly fails in the 3.0T S-tronic transmissions) or something mechanically has failed but just a momentary problem from a bad learned value.

Hope that this helps.

Thank you for the photo’s @Ape_Factory i cant believe you have photo’s of these parts lol. I did re-code the battery with the VCDS but i used a Bosch AGM battery but it had no code so i found a vitara code exactly the same spec and put that in and it worked fine as i read they are one of the same battery’s ??

I thought a solenoid going bad maybe ?? I know i had issues with my stage 2 TCU tune to begin with but for the last few months after re-flashing it the way it should be done the transmission has in fact run really well and not missed a beat and I’ve pushed it really hard on some occasions ? Thanks again James :+1:

Hi there @JimmyBones and thank you for your knowledge on this i appreciate it :+1: I did do the adaptations today after @JamesRS5 said it would be a good idea it was with the VCDS tho but i did do this

This all went ok and i completed every step without a issue even tho i was driving around for ages seem to take for ever hiding from the police as we are in lock down lol.
The scenario you have put down is spot on and what happened to a tee !
I did think that it might be (from what I’ve been reading) the shift fork 3 solenoid could slightly be out of alignment of the proper position ?
I have been out today like i said to complete adaption but before i done this i had been out to replicate what happened and it was fine never missed a beat 5th gear and i smashed the throttle into 3rd and it took off like a rocket no issues i done this 3/ 4 times and nothing ?? I also drove it really hard again after adaption and it again was spot on only thing i noticed was the gear changes where slightly smoother than before up and down the gears.

Well in that case I would drive it and see if you can get it to act up occasionally. Obviously don’t get it trouble with the Fuzz. Good luck.

Yeah I’m thinking the same and ill see if it plays up again hopefully this may have solved it but I’m not holding my breath !
Ill also check all the other parts that all of you guys have suggested, I’m OCD with things like that anyway.
Thank you once again for all the advice you have all given I’d be lost if it was not for this forum and all the great guys on it !! Thanks again :+1:

Wow. Intense read. Hope it never acts up again. Good luck!

Thanks @Vancmann it was a scary moment !! Car has been fine so far but i have not been out in it much as of late due to covid, im just keeping my fingers crossed :crossed_fingers:

Any changes Steve? Things going ok?

Hey Michel thanks for asking mate, there’s been no changes car has been laid up tho as I’m waiting on a new belt tensioner still, it was meant to be here early last week but I’m still waiting on it from Audi they are saying they posted it but I’ve still not got it ??

I have been driving it before hand just not hard as the belt would slip if i went over 7500rpm car has been fine with no gearbox issues so I’m hoping its ok, i checked the harness and temp switch over and it was all as it should be no dirt or oil on them at all, i also done a full adaptation to reset everything for good measure ! So time will tell.
I’m thinking it was the bumpy road i was on as i went over it quite fast and car did hop and jump around a lot and it happened straight after that so maybe the transmission didn’t like that causing the oil to get air bubbles in it and that maybe caused it ??
