I need a little help....tiptronic issues...

Hello all.

My vehicle is a 2005.5 s4 with the tiptronic transmission. I’m currently at 116800 miles and have been having some drivability issues. I have rpm fluctuations of about 200 rpms and a vibration at the bottom of the rpm dip. It sounds like I’m driving over rumble strips. I also hear a slight squeak as the engine reaches the bottom of its rpm dip. The transmission has started shuddering (best word I can use to describe it).
I changed the fluid and filter and there is still no change in drivability. I’ve read that this can be a torque converter issue. I did some logging of the torque converter slip and placed markers when the transmission did its rumble. There was increased slip when the car reached the low point of its rpm dip. So this is as far as my knowledge goes. I also logged the car and there were absolutely no misfires. Is there a way to help identify the exact problem and to isolate it from transmission/TC?
Any ideas where to look next? I’m ready to trade this thing in! HELP!

Do you know for sure its the transmission. Generally if there is enough slipage that you can feel the TCU will kick out a code for you. Also if the ECU sees enough of a range difference there should be a code as well.

When this issue happens have you tried to put the car in N and see if the issue goes away.

I’m almost 100% positive it’s an issue after the engine. When I’m going at a steady speed, say 35mph, when the rpms dip down I get a vibration. It’s very noticable. It happends at a steady pace, consistent with the rpm fluctuations. Sometimes so noticable that one of the plastic pieces on my dash rattles. It sounds like I’m going over rumble strips.(as we call them here )
My car only does this when the engine is below 2500 rpms and under light to moderate throttle. Once the transmission kicks down a gear ot the rpms exceed 2500 it goes away. I don’t think going into neutral would help much while I’m under load as when I let off the gas it quits doing it.
Also, When below 2500rpms, as I try to accelerate, the car feels as if it’s in need of kicking down to a lower gear but doesn’t and it “shudders.” I guess it could be described as “bucking” or kicking. I have been waiting for some sort of code to go off of, but no luck. Just codes for my piggie pipes and other unrelated issues.

So this only happens under load. if so have you checked the transmission fluid level.

Yessir. I also did the transmission filter and fluid change with absolutely no improvement. If anything, the shifts seem smoother but it still does this. I’ve noticed it less lately when I drive it in S or just paddle shift and keep the rpms up over 2500 or so.

Did this just start in the colder weather. You said you changed the fluid and filter. Did you double check to make sure the fluid level was good

Hello, sorry it has been a little bit since I’ve been on here I’ve been super busy. I parked the S4 about 2 weeks ago and bought something else to drive for now.
This last summer I noticed the car making its rumble/shudder while driving some Mountain Roads. I had to keep turning the music down and paying attention to the road to see if it was caused by imperfections and the road surface. I thought it was all in my head and it was the roots from the trees growing under the road making the car Rumble. Fast forward until recently, yes when it got cold, the car started doing the RPM bob up and down. After doing a lot of reading, people say this is pretty normal and that it’s the torque converter causing the RPMs to bob up and down. I read a couple places about the torque converter seals going bad and this can cause that. Recently though, the car has exhibited acceleration issues when under light-to-medium throttle. It’s almost as if the car Miss steps as it’s accelerating. If i jam on the throttle it goes away completely. If you drive around like a maniac everywhere, the car drives absolutely fine. I plugged in my laptop and booted up vcds and did some logging. I’m not an expert doing any of that, I don’t know my way around vcds extremely well, but every time the car did it thing, I hit the mark button. Looking at the data, each time I hit the mark button, there seemed to be little bit of slip in the torque converter. When the RPMs bob up and down, when they get to the lower portion of the RPMs, there is a mechanical sound that I have a hard time describing. I apologize if I’m repeating anything I already posted, just trying to remember how the car drives off the top of my head as I haven’t driven it for a week or so.
After driving around with the transmission like this, I figured the first thing I should try would be a fluid and filter swap. It did absolutely nothing to help with the issues I’m experiencing. I checked and double-checked and made sure that the transmission fluid level is right. I took a level to the transmission pan and make sure the car was level and I made sure that I watched the transmission temperature and vcds and that I follow the step-by-step instructions in the service manual and from other DIYs I found. This isn’t the first automatic ZF transmission I have worked on, so I have done this procedure a few times with other cars as well. After driving around for a couple hundred miles, I double checked the fluid level to make sure the fluid level was correct.
I wish there was a way to do a more detailed diagnosis of the problem. The problem I’m having is I don’t have any DTC or stored codes to go off of. I have already started saving up for the inevitable. I’m either going to go one of two routes. 6MT swap or I’m going to buy a new torque converter and a rebuild kit from ZF and tackle my first automatic rebuild.
Thoughts?

Well wish me luck on my endevers, I ordered a 6 speed manual swap kit from wolf auto!

Good luck! Post up a thread or continue this one if you have the energy. I’d love to see one documented.

I have lofty future dreams of getting a new short block or re-build (rings, hone, valve seals, etc) and doing the 6sp swap on my sedan once the oil consumption becomes unbearable or something else gives way. I figure at that point I will pick up a new daily and have extra time to wrench on the S.
