I’m finally back in the S4 game, will document issues / help needed / progress in this thread going forward.

I flew into Seattle and picked up the car 4/17 afternoon. Nogaro / 6MT / Avant in great shape w/ 48k on the clock. No audible cold / warm knock, everything seems to work as it should. I DID not do any type of PPI, bought sight unseen from interweb in NY saying fuck it:) Seemed I should be safe for timing with this mileage.

Issues -all minor for me.
-1 key
-no floor mats
-some generic tires on back with matching tread pattern of bridgestones on front

  • Car is all stock except rnse and smoked tails. Owner 1 in california put 20k miles in 6 years = enthusiast. Owner 2 put 28k in 3 years. I’m thinking mr. california had modded the car and returned it to stock, but just a guess at this point based on tail lights. Owner 2 I can’t seem to find anything about on forums etc, assume it was not an enthusiast so maintenance is questionable for last 3 years / 28k miles.

The plan - take a week off work and drive back to NY across the country. Take my sweet time, see some scenery, become one with the car.

  1. Day 1 - Friday evening drove across Washington to Couer D’Alene Idaho. This was about 315 miles in 5 hours, no issues. * No Rattle*

  2. Day 2 - Saturday - Couer D’Alene Idaho across Montana to Dickinson North Dakota. About 12 hours at 824 miles.
    Western Montana is beautiful, lots of open highway. * No Rattle in AM*

  3. Day 3 - Sunday - Dickinson North Dakota, across Minnesota to Tomah Wisconsin. About 10 hours at 693 miles. * in morning thought I heard a millisecond of rattle at startup* Rain the last half of the day, all wipers are shot. Learn rear wiper washer not working…

  4. Day 4 - Monday - Tomah Wisconsin, across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania to NY just past Buffalo. About 13 hours at 882 miles. * No Rattle in AM*

  • Added 1 quart of oil at 2650 miles, low oil light came on. I think that is pretty reasonable considering all those highway miles at 3k+ rpm.
  1. Day 5 - Tuesday - about 3 hours and 300 miles to home. No Rattle in AM Sleep, beer…

All in all very relaxing drive. Was a little paranoid that I heard a possible rattle on day 3 morning. Has not happened since, not sure if it was real or something else.

On tap now:

  1. Fixed the rear wiper washer, nozzle jet clogged with crud. Ordered rear wiper Aero conversion kit and new wipers for front.
  2. Oil change this week with Lubro/Liqui moly, planning to change every 3k going forward.
  3. Change plugs / coil packs / air filter
  4. Acquired some floor mats
  5. Local Audi dealer which I’ve never been to has a free inspection program, going to let them look at it and get state safety inspection (Latham Audi outside Albany, if you have feedback let me know).
  6. Need to change the rest of the fluids on the car.

I’ve found a guy 2 hours from here that does timing jobs for a very fair price. Will see how it goes over the next few months if I start hearing rattle or not or I was paranoid that 1 morning. It seems pretty rare for a 50k mile car to have failure but not ruling it out. Will see what I observe.

No major plans today to go apeshit on modding immediately, have spent this years project cash on my other non audi project car.
