Inner axle boot replacement

So I need help figuring out how to get the back part of the axle off to replace the boot. I already took the c clip off but I can’t seem to get the rest out of the base. Any tips?

Oh boy, do I remember that “fun” job. I’ve only done it once, and I will never do it again. From now on I just slap a new axle on there and be done with it. YMMV, of course.

Anyway, I’m not condoning the method I used, but it worked for me. I put the axle shaft in my vise, and then ever so carefully pounded the base off of the joint using a 4 lb sledge hammer and a punch.

I still remember the base going zinging across the garage when it finally popped off. ;D

Yuuuuup although $15 for a boot kit vs. 300 for a new axle is good enough to convince me to do it. I ended up using a hammer to get the base off. THen I needed to use a hammer to get the tripod off. Then I used a hammer to get everything back on again. I still have to do the other side :’(

I do those all the time. Put the axle shaft in a vise and hook up my 12 pound slide hammer. Then two taps and the outer housing comes right off. There is a C-clip on the end of the axles shaft that holds the tripod joint on. Changing out CV boots is so much easier when you use a vise since you can clean everything so much easier.

As already said. The best results for this job come with a big heavy hammer. Just make sure to remove all the needed C clips

For me I just removed the outer spindle thingy with a 3 jaw puller. Then lubed up the shaft and slid the new inner boot down the axle. Then replaced the outer boot and popped the spindle back on. I don’t enjoy removing my axles so made sense to replace them both anyway and just easier to tackle it by removing the outer.
