Intake mod.

Let me start a topic rather then crash someone’s post.
I did something simular with my S3 8P with the ITG intake.

My reason for doing this test is to see if I can increase flow to the intake, but mainly for some sound effects at the track. Car sounds a bit tame vs the rest of the hooligans race cars.
It’s quick to convert back to my daily setup.

At the local hardware store the sell these sheats of Correx. It’s plastic, so it’s easy to work with and keeps heat away much better then Alclad or any other metal.

Used a piece of cardboard to get my basic design and copied it on the Correx.

Used the rubber foot pieces off the stock airbox to secure the new heatshield in place.

Fitted the APR pipe into position. I put some of that sponge strips between the chasis and the intake pipe so they don’t get scratched. Nice and snug fit.

Fitted some rubber tubing on the top of the shield, this now rests against the carpet under the bonnet sealing the box away from most of the engine heat.

I’ll give it a bash tomoz.

same day before after logs would have been cool

Buggers stole my laptop while we where sleeping. I’ll have to hook up with a m8 to do that now.

It’ll be interesting to see how this turns out. Great job doing this on your own.

Good stuff man! I like that you are trying different things…

Thx gents.
Had fun the last couple of days.

Fitted 20" wheels. Still in 2 minds if they should stay.

Had the Milltek non resonated pipes for a while and eventualy got tips i was happy with. Straight fit into the pipes. Small tick welds to keep them in place.

Here is a vid clip of what it sounds like. Now it sounds like a V6

Rims and tips. Proper upgrades. Not too sure if I’m sold on the rims. Do you have before and after tip pictures?

The RS4 rims are bigger then stock? Did you ever get a chance to see how your intake changes effected the car?

Going to the track 1 Aug if weather permits. Will compare then.

So I went to the track Friday night, + - 13 deg C, no wind.
Ran a 12.24 with my 19" on. Track was unprepped.
Previously ran 12.29 with 18" on prepped track in day time. Used 91 oct plus NF octane booster.

This race vs Beemer with small block Chev V8 motor. He ran a 12.7 in this run.

Got my ass whipped by a GTR35 with mods. TC didn’t disengage, so it bogged twice before picking up speed.

Personaly without data to back it up, the car pulls stronger. It sure sounds better ;D
Next event on 23rd Aug - prepped track.

12.24 is excellent. Well done.

Oh and the GTR is shockingly fast. I’ve raced a couple over the years at the track. One time it was a guy I know, and he beat me so bad I could have called him to tell him his time before I was done.

Thx Sakimano.
DSG software almost ready. They just want to put a file locking / anti tamper thing on the file. Then we will try higher octane map. Small steps

12.24 great times. How many runs did you get? I missed what the setup was. Did you have a pulley?

Question: Did the heat shield ever melt away?
It’s situated so close to the exhaust manifold, I had to ask!
I was considering doing the same thing. Just don’t know how long corrugated plastic can hold up.

No melting or distorting. Been on the car now for over 3000 kms.
Only difference I noticed was the Air Filter picked up more dust than in the Airbox. I’ll just have to clean it more often.
Like I said before, even when parked, the filter temp stays at or close to Ambient temps. I’ll see if I can slip away from work and do a dyno pull with the APR cover and box section, vs this.
I’m expecting shorter duration on the dyno - spools quicker.
It’s such a cheap mod, it’s worth trying out.

Thanks for the info!
Thanks to you, I was inspired to do something similar.
However, mine was totally free!

I cut up a piece of underhood insulation from my old E36 and used that as a heat shield.
Applied it so that it actually has 2 layers: 1 for shielding heat, and a 2nd to resist abrasion on any painted surface as well as to protect the hard coolant line. I utilized the stock upper half of the airbox and rotated it.

Went for a drive…came back, and checked temps.
What a big change! The temps by the motor were hot, as expected. However, temp by the filter was very much like ambient. I’d bet this ghetto rig setup is more effective than a roc euro at shielding heat, as I’m using actual insulating material + retaining the stock intake boot…which being plastic/rubber/whatever, will not heat soak like a thin alloy intake tube would.

Goahead, laugh at me

Nice one. On my previous cars I made the heat shields with Alclad ( I work on Aircraft , so I can get my hands on it easy ) , but this fluted plastic sheet, doesn’t get as hot as anything I’ve tried.
You like the whine from the charger ?

So went down to our local track again this weekend. All 10 runs between 12.2 and 12.4. Very happy with the results as temps are starting to climb as we head into our summer season.
Intake temps remained low on intake. The APR cooling system does its job well but the charger seems to retain lots of heat, even when I pop the hood to get it cooler. Must try and and make a plan.

Ran a modified GTR 35 and got schooled :). He ran 11.4 vs my 12.3.

My bud took this Cellphone vid vs GTR32

Commentator keeps saying I’m engaging LC. Plonker

Have you ever tried icing down the charger. That should help a little while your in the pits. What was your kph.
