Intake Removal

What is the best way to pull out the intake. I have removed all the hardware and its ready to pull out but it won’t budge. I can’t even get it to move. Is there a trick to getting the intake unseated? I don’t want to break anything. Any tips appreciated.

thanks.

Yes, this write up was really helpful and is what i have uses to get to the point where i am now. Would using a putty knife to wedge a gap between the IM and the engine block be recommended? I have tried to pull and lift on the IM and it just wont give. What have you guys done to work it loose?

I wouldn’t recommend the putty knife, as the mating surface is soft aluminum and the sealing surface around each port is very narrow.

I had a lot of trouble getting the intake to come loose also. I believe it had never been removed in 90k miles. I used a mallet to hit it in all directions, but that didn’t do anything. I think the way I finally got it was to use a pry bar tween the upper half of the intake manifold and the front drivers side lifting bracket mounting surface. Prying in a way that rocked the IM upward. Obviously you want to be super careful as all the things you’re prying on and against are thin cast aluminum.

Another tactic that worked, once i got it started, was putting one hand into the hole in the back where the upper intake bolts on, and pulling up. Took a few swear words to get it though.

First make sure those back bolts are off. A lot of people miss the back bolts that are hard to get to your going to need to remove one or both of your HPFP units to get the intake off when you break the seal.

Get a deadblow hammer. They are plastic with sand on the inside. That will make short work of getting the seal to break between the intake and heads. just hit it from the front in the middle. A few good blows and it will break free. if you have the front end off the car it will be 10x eaiser. Just make sure to take off the knock sensors and you can put a piece of wood slightly under the intake and tap
