Intro - Just some guy with a B6

Hello everybody. New here, been on AZ for a while (B6_4.2 over there), mainly just lurk around and sprinkle what little knowledge I can whenever I can.

I’ve had my B6 since November 2011, so far it’s been an interesting ownership experience. I do most of the work on my car myself, but will on occasion take it to a shop if I need to. As for issues that I’ve had with the S4… Had to pretty much overhaul the entire front suspension in 2012, took that opportunity to install coil overs as well. I was stationed in Washington at the time and had just gotten back from a deployment, so this was one of the few times I opted to take it to a shop for the work. September of 2014 brought catastrophic engine failure. I had gone to the local drag strip on a test-n-tune night to get some baseline pulls before I do any more mods, it got rained out before I could even get a single pull, on my way home bank 1 skipped and dropped a valve in cylinder 2… I considered doing a swap instead of just replacing it with another 4.2, but decided that the only other motor I would consider would be a 2.5 I5 with a snail on the side, but that would be a little too much work for me to tackle on a reasonable budget compared to a direct replacement. Took my time on that project and did a few upgrades while I was in there; did the intermediate timing setup from JHM, JHM stage 3 clutch and LWFW, JHM LWCP, Apikol trans, diff, and motor mounts in the race density, JHM intake manifold spacers, and then other maintenance items as well. Still need to get my A/C working… Most recently in March I ended up getting 2 blown out tires within 3 days of each other (thanks Colorado winters), that forced me to throw on the summer wheels a little early and also destroyed both front wheel bearings.

So now I’m just enjoying her and keeping her on the road. I’ll try and update the thread with some photos as soon as I can.

‘New’ motor mid-timing job

A big welcome to another Colorado S4 owner. Nice mod list and a good story. I hope you enjoy AR and the great people here as much as I have.

Welcome to AR, always good to see another B6 owner. Seems the Colorado crowd is growing as well. Gotta be careful around here because the streets suck in Denver. I actually raised my car up a little after moving out here from Chicago. That wheel blow out is crazy looking. I’ve never seen anything like that.

Thanks! Hope to learn more about this platform and help out where I can.

Yeah that one happened on the I-25 and 270 interchange, it was more a series of potholes that couldn’t really be avoided, than one single pothole

Wow… I also bought mine in November of 2011, but had to dump a bunch of money into it a year earlier than you for the full timing service at 51k miles. We also have the same exhaust set up haha

welcome I like to say to the new b6 guys your in the right place if you want the technical guys and the guys interested in learning more about the cars. The drama on the other site is good for this one because all the real car guys are coming over here and all the drama can stay over there.

If you even think you have a question ask it. Everyone is here to help. Great mod list the car looks awsome…

Hey Erik! Great to see you over here on AR

Welcome!

Thanks guys, just got some parts in for the car today too. Mainly maintenance stuff and A/C receiver dryer and orifice tube to get my A/C operational again. Also got a sway bar from 034 to throw on…

So my resources say that the system takes 250ml of oil. Since I’m replacing the receiver dryer, do I need to fill it up with that much oil or a little less to account for what is in the lines?

If you havent already consider adding the compressor to that list. The are super weak and fail often. As for the oil yes add the full amount. Most places recommend adding a little extra so you should be fine is adding the full amount.

Thanks for the advice. I was planning on looking into a compressor depending on what I found in the receiver/dryer and orifice tube. Seems like a PITA to replace it without really needing to…
Hopefully I can get this stuff done in the next couple days.

Compressor takes 4.38 oz

and I just got a new compressor from JimmyBones’ recommendation (DiscountACParts.com)

They sell a model they make for $29 which you can really get for $265 if you ask…well when I called they told me their branded compressor was out of stock with no ETA on more so they instead offered the OEM Denso unit for $600 (normally $850) or a rebuilt Denso for the $265 (normally $550). I was really glad I called before making the order.

EDIT: I just looked at their site again and they must have gotten some new compressors because they are listing the one they make for $400 now…weird they upped the 9price $100 suddenly.
