JHM B6 S4 Vs Unitronic TUNE RESULTS.....

Not mine but I tought I would post for the log and dyno lovers out there

After years we haev seen dyno sheets showing JHM besting Unitronic on the B6 and B7 S4s
we have seen the 1/4 mile results showing JHM beating out the compititaion now here is one more

With all the fan fair you get a few members that say… my jhm throttle is too toutchy in 1st… then you get the Etuners that say… oh they must have hyped up the throttle… no or they just gave you 30 more wtq over the other chip tuners and probably 45wtw over stock at LOW LOW Rpms…

then lts not forget this one

Yes this is awesome info for the dyno lovers on AZ to look at…and thanks for the video link, I had to watch it again and it put a smile on my face…haha that sounds gay but o well

It’s not a dyno but a vagcom log turned into a tq and hp chart.

Still a huge difference. Who posted that?

We need to log rsfazz’ RS4 and see how his unit runic tune is doing on there. Uni made some big claims.

I know it’s not a dynograph Saki, but vagcom log lovers wouldn’t have gotten my point across.

Makes me wish that I had done a before and after dyno for the JHM tune that I got a few months back.

Trust me, you’re not missing out on any important info…

Haha, you’re probably right. Still curious though.

Agreed, would love to do some runs with my car. Unitronic does make big claims and I would love to see where my $700 went…

Do you have vagcom? If so you can log a few parameters.

I’m gonna come clean here - I have no idea how to do that stuff… :frowning:

I would love a little step by step on how to log my car. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no stranger to the RS4 or cars in general, but I’ve never done any logging of any sort with this car or my previous B5 S4 or even any of my Supras for that matter.

I have a VAG COM but it was the one that came with my B5 S4. I don’t believe it works for the B7 but (knock on wood) I’ve never needed it for my RS4. The VAG mods it has were done by my shop (Eurotech).

Mark, if you come to the next RS4 NYC / Bear Mountain run bring a laptop. I’ll take you through a few basic procedures at the lunch break or before/after the run. Once you see how it works you’ll start experimenting and will see how intuitive it is once you’re familiar.

Ahh gotcha. Well it’s super easy to log. I think beemercer did a great diy with step by step pictures etc.

If you have someone local who can lend a modern vagcom, you can get it done in five minutes.

yeah I did, the site that I hosted the picture on deleted the picture though… I may have it sitting in my files somewhere but it’s gonna be tough to find.

Hey Paul! I am definitely there man. Any idea when it will be yet? Needs to be late May or later. This is a crazy month for me (it’s a good thing, busy = business) but I won’t be able to do anything until around memorial day or after.

Funny I just got an email from Unitronic about their “Spring Sale” as I was posting in this thread. $50 off software… I still think their tune is overpriced at $700.

$700 is pretty expensive when you consider that to get tuned, you have to walk past so many other good options at the same or less money.

Agreed. Although the JHM tune wasn’t out at the time I got my tune. The only other options available (to my knowledge) were APR, revo, and EPL. I heard good things about the Unitronic tune so I opted for it. Not saying it was a bad choice, but I would like to see these logs on how I stack up against other cars with similar mods and a different tune. That would put things in perspective a bit.

^^^yeah, it’s hard to say

to be honest as long as they removed that torque limit throttle limiter in the first 3 gears you’ll get a big change. From there if they lean it out a little vs. the rich stock AFR you should see some gains. Add some timing. Not sure what else they do to throttle. Stock isn’t bad in sport mode other than the restriction.

The JHM tune does loads of little things that add up to the delta we usually see over other tunes, but among GIAC/EPL/APR/UNI I reckon they’re all pretty straightforward, and not dramatically different.

At the end of the day it’s not a turbo motor or a supercharger with a bypass valve to artificially limit power. It’s a pretty balls to the wall NA engine with a reasonably good stock tune as is. So just software alone won’t be the solution.

Where the JHM tune seems to differentiate itself is as I said those other dozens of little improvements they take the time to find, and the tune’s ability to benefit as your mod list grows. EPL fanboys will have you believe you need a custom tune to take advantage of a catback or downpipe mod, however that’s just not true if the tuner can build an OTS option with upside as you add mods, while maintaining proper safety to keep the car safe before you do.

Here’s the tune I purchased, the stage 1+. Paid $100 less at Waterfest, still not much of a bargain.

One of the “features” is: “Audi Factory Safety Limiters Retained”.

So I am guessing they didn’t remove the torque limiter, but they remove the “speed governor.” ::slight_smile:

If I could do it all over again I would’ve just waited and then went to Elite and got the JHM tune. I was just a little worried at the time with the talk of pinging and the like. Yes yes I know these issues are sorted now, I guess you could say I was impatient, and maybe was having a little too much fun at Waterfest. All good though. People have wasted much more than $700 on their cars and at the end of the day, I’d actually prefer a tune that is a little more on the conservative side. This is my daily driver after all. But, maybe it wasn’t a total waste. We will see how I do against the JHM tuned cars that are local to me when we meet up this summer.

they definitley removed the torque limiter (it’s an easy torque bump), but that safety thing they reference is not desensitizing knock detection etc.

I’ll be able to answer this for you after next weekend. It’s been a year since my baseline dyno, but nothing on the car has changed besides the JHM tune. Going in for some maintenance and a couple pulls afterwards. I’ll report back with what I find.
