JHM Downpipes + JHM Catback (resonated) + GoPro + External Microphone = 4 vids

After getting a new GoPro, I found the sound was basically useless. You either have it on the trunk where the little internal mic is overwhelmed with drone and bass…or you have it up and out of the way but in the windpath. To keep the camera out of the wind, you had to put it somewhere with virtually no view (i.e. bumper looking backwards etc).

So, I bought this external microphone to see how it would work out. It’s pretty much perfect for this stuff. It was $20, is small, has a 20 foot long cord that is thin enough you can close the cord in the car door and all is well.

-Audio Technica ATR3350. About a $25 investment at most. Comes with a 20 foot long cord which is perfect for mounting the GoPro where you want, and the microphone anywhere else on the car.
-GoPro Hero3 Black
-GoPro 3 3.5 mm external microphone adapter

Hopefully this helps those who are looking for JHM exhaust sound or who just like listening to cars (I do this on youtube a lot lol). This is JHM downpipes (catted) + catback (resonated). Otherwise stock.

First In Car video + Rear Bumper mounted microphone.

Another with the same setup. Car sounds pretty intense.

Then a couple where the microphone is actually in the engine bay, taped to the intake/MAF hose. Lots of mechanical whirring going on in there. Sounds great when it’s WOT. Cool to actually hear the engine. The interior of the car is quiet that you rarely get to hear this sound. THe E9X M3 has a lot more in cabin sound and sounds virtually identical at WOT.

I’m thinking of ordering this mic too… Sounds great!

Excellent videos Saki, time to visit cars.com

Sounds great man! Did you make any passes this year with the exhaust? Sorry if I missed them…

We never made it to the track due to the weather and Cayuga’s aversion to the cold!

Great videos and audio, I’ll for sure get one next time I’m in the GTA

Unfortunately I didn’t.

I had it installed in time but the damn track kept not opening due to cold. Then they closed on like Nov 10 or something.

We rented the other track but it snowed so we had to cancel.

Not sure what the car will do. It has certainly picked up some sound but the stock tune won’t let the car take full advantage of the flow.

When I did a 60-130 it picked up a whole second, so there’s definitely some kind of gain. Not sure what it will mean from first to fourth.

It still has cats in, so keep that in mind. Just in the main cat spot with no precats (we have two cats per side) . Cars that gut precats usually pick up about 15-20 whp with stock tune think. This exhaust plus tune can gain around 35-40 whp and 30-35 wtq from memory. So a carbon clean full exhaust + tune rs4 should done around 360 whp. In my setup, around 335-340. Assuming stock is 320 whp.

Not sure what any of that means at the strip. Only one way to find out. I will be in california next week. Should ship the car down lol.

That sounds great!

Thanks

haha - very cost-effective.

Videos turned out great. JHM’s exhaust sounds wicked. Can’t get enough of it.

The sound! and there seems to be minimal drone as well! Probably sounds better in person too. I’d like to go to a system in the future with less drone

Man those videos are sweet. Good stuff Saki. Car sounds phenomenal.

there’s drone from about 1000-2000 per all the 4.2 V8 Audis with free flowing exhausts.

If you’re on the throttle from 1000-2000 you are likely either in 1st gear and it’s gone quickly, or you’re in like 6th gear going 40 MPH and accelerating…which is not the right gear to accelerate. You learn to drive around it. I remember being terrified of drone when I first got my exhaust installed on my old S4. I thought I had ruined the car lol. Within a week is was a nonissue.

I would love to install the stock mufflers which have a bunch of drone reduction design to them. Then you could also have the valves. Of course if it didn’t work you will have hacked up your stock AND aftermarket system.

Ya, that is much better than my AWE setup. It drones between 1500-3000rpms and over 100mph the cabin noise is a constant loud hum beating on your ear drums, which i experienced driving back from LA in the desert, very annoying. Im either driving spiritedly or grandpaly, so 8mpg or 20mg. So at times i will dip into the <3k rpms in 6th gear which is fine due to the torque but that drone!

I like your idea with valves, since i my drive styles would fit this perfectly! Is this a special custom set up or does JHM/FI offer valveS?

Sounds amazing!

That sounds great!

Also to reiterate, you picked up a second in your 60-130 time with the same basic conditions? IE. same stretch of road in the same direction as before, and roughly equivalent weather conditions? If so, this really needs to be expounded upon because that is incredibly impressive…especially without a tune! That seriously highlights how well thought out this exhaust is, not only in size but also x-pipe placement because it takes a substantial amount of power to have that kind of improvement. I wasn’t planning on dumping my Milltek because I love the sound, but that right there is enough for me to consider jumping ship.

Thanks. Yes same same. Better DA last time when stock actually. I will do it again. It’s a friends private road to his business.

60-130 is a shitty test in my opinion. You can shave a second and it can be primarily from 110-130…aka where you never really use the car. Must pulls for fun end in fourth and most quarter mile runs you are done by 110-120. Going to 130 means you must be trying to outrun a helicopter (or are about to).

The stock tune definitely holds the car back. Still there are gains. In a log I did yesterday I was moving pretty good. The car has gained some 20-23 hp and lbft torque according to the logged “engine torque actual” column (which measure nm which I converted back to lb ft and hp) . I will post a graph up of that soon. Was 378hp-304lbft when I logged it stock and is 402hp-324 lbft now. Again these are vagcom logs. Other pbox comparos

60-90 3.8 vs 4.2
60-100 5.9 vs 6.2
0-60 4.2 vs 4.35

And 3000-8000 was 8.0 seconds vs 8.34-8.5 seconds stock.

Primarily it’s the elimation of of the precats . I have high flow cats in the main cat position on the jhm down pipes.

I would like to hit the strip to see if I can get below 12.55 @ 110+. That would be a gettable goal I think compared to my pb stock time of 12.75@108.3.

Re the videos, looks like TO is cursed with left lane drivers too.

and right lane bandits with loud ass cars
