JHM short shifter - is it worth it??

After reading all of the issues with installation alignment issues, wanted to see how many are enjoying their new shifter and whether the minor issues are overcome with proper install.

link the installation and alignment issues

when you do so, realise that JHM sells hundreds of these every year, for the past 5-6 years.

then do the math on how much of a problem this actually is, then report back!

If you link to anything from mickf29, just go ahead and delete that as he was outed as a liar.

I absolutely love mine (Trio) and so does everyone else that has tried it (and I invite almost everyone that seems to be interested in performance to sit in my Avant and try it)!

Sak, so you are saying the issues are overhyped. I did want to get the shifter was uncomfortable with little nuances that folks report. Do you run the short shifter yourself?

I’ve had it for quite a while and I love it. Just need to find someone that knows how to actually properly install them.

Mine was perfect for 20,000 miles. I’m sure the guy who bought it from me is enjoying it just as much as I did.

It’s all about the alignment. Unlike the stock shifter, the play in the shifter won’t make up for miss-alignments. The JHM shifter is completely solid, so you either are on the money, or you’re mick f

One of my favorite mods. Yes you may have to dial it in over the coarse of a week. That may be a big deal for guys who wear women’s panties…lol. But for the rest of us… we understand that the reason it takes extra time to dial in properly is the same reason why it shifts absolutely perfectly once you get that sweet spot. I’ll use the caparison of cameras to illustrate my point. You can (a) use a point and shoot to take a picture or (b) use a Digital SLR with a specialized lens and customized settings to take a brilliant photo.

Trust me its worth the “effort”.

Is the alignment tool JHM sells going to help or is this a trial and error dialing in. I assume based on Apat I should leave the boot off and drive open until it’s dialed in?

Absolutely worth it. I’ve had it for at least 15k miles and no issues. Also have the trio set up… Its worth doing the trio package if you can, gives you such a connected, raw gated shifting feel.

I’ve never had to re adjust it either, I think the problems some people report are all related to incorrect initial install.

I finally ordered the full trio set last week. Did everyone here leave the set up as it ships from JHM? Meaning, left it with the 40% throw reduction option in tact and left the reverse spring it comes assembled with in place?

If anyone changed it to any of the other options please let me know why. I plan on trying it out as is but am curious what people did after having it for a few thousand miles.

I’ve gotten to used to mine now that I feel the throw is still a little too long lol.

I’d put the stiffest reverse spring in. Or at least the medium. The one that’s in there is too soft. I left it at 40% and love it.

After a week you wont want to shift any other way.

I had the softest spring in mine and it always causes the shifter to get caught on the reverse gate on a hard 1-2 shift. Install the stiffer one for sure.

LOL! that could be bad

Good info, so it seems so far:

People like the 40% reduction, shortest throw which is how it comes.
It’s wise to swap in the medium or stiffest reverse spring for the reasons listed.

Thanks, much appreciated.

Hey Paul - I’m sure you will, but please make sure to post back once you get everything installed. I am really interested in buying this and will probably get this trio when I order the RS4 LW crank pulley.

Merry Christmas to me! ;D

I plan to, along with the other parts going on at the same time.

What I can do in the interim is say that I am 100% satisfied with the I/M spacers and the LWCP. They both have been a nice addition to the total package I’m working on.

I’ll start a thread once EVERYTHING has been put on my car and will detail all of the pro’s and cons of each part in detail.

trio seems like a nightmare install (unless you’re already removing your downpipes etc). Don’t you have to drop the trans a bit?

I installed with the factory-installed (soft) spring and wasn’t the biggest fan of the pushdown feel but thought it was okay enough to leave as-is. But, then I ended up swapping the spring for the medium one to see if that would remedy a separate noise issue I was experiencing with the shifter. It was a little stiff at first but seemed to soften up after a while. I would definitely recommend a stiffer spring.

After getting used to the shorter throw – agree that it feels like it could be even shorter :).

So, moral of the story is leave it at 40% reduction and put a stiffer spring on there before installation if possible. And also check to see if you if you get any pushdown noise before tossing the assembly back in the car.

I also have the solid shifter linkage but decided not to install since downpipes have to come off and you have to notch your factory piece. When I swap to piggies, I’ll consider putting it in.

No need to touch the trans. Just get the DP out of the way.
