JHM Stage 1 s/c purchased

Looks fantastic.

Are you getting an FI exhaust?

No… Well not at this time, but mabe in the future

Question… The tune I’m getting from Jhm, does it come with launch assist or is it an option?

You should really ask Jake@JHM , but my tune came with the LA.

^my guess is they’re gonna give you a break in and check everything out tune first. And then will give ya the full Monty later. Maybe they have it down though where they don’t need to anymore. But yes, in most cases LA is available, but you usually need to specifically ask in the SC tune as it’s not as simple as the NA setup.

I think they will definitely put you on a “break in” tune, especially being on the other coast. It’s just to make sure everything is installed correctly and it will be great for you considering your also doing a clutch. Make sure you break it in properly, I know it will be hard, but it’s important and will allow you to enjoy the car more I the end. Get a some driving Tim on the charger and proper clutch break in and then ask for a LA file.

I was just reading an old post about s/c guys having a problem with the clutch pedal staying down after 3rd gear pulls…
It was a 2 year old thread… Does this happen still or did anyone figure out why it happens?

This was the supercharged guys with JHM Stage IV clutch…bascially the kit used the RS4 pressure plate and there is an issue (even with stock RS4) with the Self adjusting spring system (SAC).

JHMs new line of clutches 1R and 5R clutches eliminate the SAC system and have been great so far.

Here is a good link on the LUK SAC: http://www.schaeffler.com/remotemedien/media/_shared_media/08_media_library/01_publications/automotiveaftermarket/brochure_1/downloads_5/luk_tech_sac_en.pdf

It’s mainly a comfort feature that you probably won’t even notice if it’s gone.

Awsome thanks… Btw did I meet you at Prime that day I stopped by?

Nope, definitely not me. I’m about 2 hours a way, but I would really like to come check out the shop. I did a lot of work to my B7 S4 and would really like to see the charger install in person. Things like that just interest me.

Could have been me. Switched to the 5R.

Yea Axel it was you… I’ve been meaning to email you about a question I had regarding cold temps… I see you’re in canada where it’s cold as fuck. Do you do anything special when the car is ice cold at start-up. I’ve read that I shouldn’t bring it above 2,500 till it’s at running temp. Jhm said that it isn’t an issue cause the charger is sealed and constantly in a bath of oil, but if it’s zero degrees out the oil’s gotta be thick.
The vortech website said that if you use the blower under 22degrees it voids the warranty.
91GL told me not to worry.

Interesting question. I wonder if it would be ideal to run a different viscosity oil in cold climates in a supercharger.

Well, I don’t drive over 3000 rpms regardless of whether I’m supercharged or not (i.e. I didn’t go over 3000rpms prior to the supercharger). It’s for our engine longevity. I wait until my engine oil temp is at least 170F before going over.

As for the 22F limit for the sc, I had never heard of that before. That’s quite interesting. I’ve never experienced any issues in colder temps but yeah, stay under 3000rpms until the oil is warmed up for the engine (and I guess the sc as well although I don’t have an oil temp gauge for the vortech unit).

In the end I trust my installer… But I was just curious because I plan on driving my s4 all year round.

Yep. Stock clutch here. Same old sticky pedal business.

This is from the vortech website…

Hmmm…that’s kind of f’ed up. Luckily I’m parked in a condo garage and it rarely gets below 25F BUT from time to time, I’ll be parked outside (when I go out) and start the car in 0-10F temps. Hmmm…

Jhm told me that because it’s sealed it’s not a problem, that is prob talking about when the cold oil sits and thickens, it might not get to the charger fast enough. But because it’s a sealed charger, we’re good.
