it seems like it is mostly the RS4’s that have issues. My b6 saw the stage 3 and stage 4 JHM clutch kits and even supercharged, never had an issue with a sticking clutch pedal. We have done the 3 and 4 setups in over 20 cars and not once have I had a complaint.
Not suggesting it’s guaranteed to happen but I had issues with my stage 4 and supercharger. I’m simply stating that at this point, since the clutch isn’t even installed yet, it might be better to play it safe and get an R series clutch. The owner can go with a 1R if he doesn’t want a super aggressive bite.
I have the 5r and LWFW. My tranny sounds like a box of marbles at idle/neutral with the clutch engaged. Disengage the clutch and the sound goes away. I was sure it was the throwout bearing as this is often the culprit but that was recently replaced and after reading about some others with similar symptoms and LWFW’s in this platform, sounds like it may just be a by-product of the install…hopefully it’s not the synchros. All the other cars I’ve had and have with LWFW’s installed, none have had this issue after installation.
I would be interested in oil options that alleviate the rattling if anyone has a proven solution.
As for drivability with the 5r and LWFW, my wife can still drive the car in SF and parallel park like a pro. Non-issue.
I have the 5R on my S4 too. There is a thread on Audizine where the OP asked about this too. He brought up a tech tip from UUC. UUC makes lightweight flywheels for BMWs. Here is a bit of my post:
I hear a tick or rattle at idle and the flywheel/clutch chatter is most obvious on my car around 1600 rpms. So far I have just gotten used to it so it doesn’t bother me. The noises also got better after I replaced the flywheel friction liner when I went from the stage four clutch with the RS4 pressure plate to the 5R clutch with the R-series pressure plate.
In my opinion, most older BMWs use ATF in their manual transmissions and ATF is pretty thin so UUC recommends adding a quart of GL-5 MT 75-140NS to smooth things out. Audi calls for GL-4 75W-90 in these transmissions. If you really want to try something similar to what UUC recommends then I would drain out the transmission fluid, put in a quart of GL-5 MT 75-140NS, and then fill it up with normal GL-4 75W-90. Of course please let us know if it makes any difference.
Lol at anyone expecting a performance clutch let alone a pucked one to not make noise. Good thing they do not offer twin and triple disk setups for these cars ;D
I’m not questioning that, just exolaining the fart anxiety from b8 owners. When I test drove one in 2009 I thought a package had fallen over in the trunk or something on the first hard up shift. It was weird.
