Looking to do Piggie DP and JHM Tune. Can you recommend anyone local in IL or Chicago to avoid mailing to JHM? Thanks
From a similar thread on AZ, it sounds like it’s best to call JHM. They don’t have a list of dealers on their website but they’ll readily tell you of a nearby local option.
I have the cable. I’m in Carol Stream. Never done a flash though
Bingo - sounds like from that retarded AZ thread that JHM are more than willing to walk you through it on the phone.
Joe
I think JHM will not sell me a tune unless I purchase the cable for $150.00. I assume its the OBDC cable?
You sure about that? Pretty sure they do not require you to buy the cable
Not true but Joe will need to set up a dealer account to access the tuning site etc.
I’m a big fan of JHM…
But am I the only one who thinks its a little lame that they did not adjust the price on the tune once the flash was available?
Was $550 plus shipping, now its $550 plus labor for a shop to install, or an extra $100 for the cable… All while they are saving tons of overhead cost on physical chips and labor to install.
Won’t stop me from buying one though. Tempted to buy a cable and loan it out to locals, plus I’d like the option of switching to the 93 tune for track/dyno days etc.
Maybe I’m just over reacting.
Over reacting…go buy a competitors chip for the same price or more!!!..that you will also get flashed and pay a labor fee.
…but why waste your $$
If JHM increased the price they would still sell tunes to people who truly care about performance and having the best tune for their car.
You bringing this up reminds me of the nickel and dime fools on AZ that want JHM to have super sales every week
why didn’t you say ‘Is it just me, or was JHM under-charging for the tune before they got this flash server thing up and running? APR, GIAC, REVO and everyone all charge $600 for the tune, but JHM charged $550…and there was tons of overhead and parts required to get tuned’
Complaining sounds cheap and ung-rateful.
Ha, I guess that’s another way to put it. Really, I don’t even consider the other companies when it comes to Audi tuning. Maybe that’s why I’m only looking at the specifics of the JHM price, instead of comparing to other non-contenders. If I offered a tune that was utterly useless and provided minimal performance gains for $1000, would that justify JHM and the others to raise their prices to compete? You can only compare prices on like products. In this case, JHM is in a league of their own, so the only previous price would be fair for comparison. Which means, the price of a product went up, with the only positive impact to the consumer being shorter turnaround time.
But my issue is purely conceptual. If a company is saving overhead cost on production of a product (especially a company that is as pro-customer as JHM), I would expect that some small amount of that savings would trickle down to the customer, or at the very least stay the same. But I really wouldn’t expect cost to go up. Don’t I remember them saying “performance over profit” or something to that effect in one of their videos?
Didn’t want to come off as ungrateful, as I said, this won’t stop me from purchasing. Just something that I noticed.
I wasn’t suggesting doing it for him. He can just borrow the cable.
I think g rat you are missing the point. If the tune was $1000 people would still buy it in great quantities. I have suggested jhm jackbuo up prices in the software for a while now. They refuse.
Further if you had any idea of the cost of setting up that server flashing thing you might appreciate that they are still not making much money, even without the shipping and eprom and soldering considered.
No overhead? What about all the IT work Saki mentioned? What about all the hand-holding and support during a flash with independent buyers or helping a reseller set everything up?
The flashing actually sounds like it’s more costly and a bigger headache for them than the old method. It’s just that it’s easier for the end customer. You don’t need to buy the cable if you can borrow one. You don’t need to pay a shop labour rates if you can do it yourself from what I understand. So all said and done, this is probably costing them more (for the time being) than it used to. Maybe once they have an established reseller network across the country and all the support efforts go down, then they may save a few bucks. It’ll take them a while to get there and then, once they’re there, another long while to recuperate everything.
I never said no overhead. But yes, you and Saki both bring up a good point. I didn’t realize the potential additional IT cost of a flash based system. That being said, the way its described in their website, I understood it as I mentioned above, a cost savings for them. Could be an issue with their explanation, could be an issue with my understanding.
So… If there are additional costs for JHM, I applaud them for keeping costs reasonable.
I inquired about this and JHM let me know that they were trying to work with CPT on becoming an installer. CPT is a good shop so it would be great if they could partner. Hasn’t happened as of yet, as far as I am aware.
it’s really not that complicated. Just DIY it.
You send a form to JHM, they send you a cable, charge you XXX, you flash your car, you send the cable back, they refund you XXX.
Have I got that wrong? THe cable charge is just a core charge I thought.
I was under the impression that the cable is a purchase. Could be wrong though, actually, I hope I’m wrong.
IIRC, they stopped the cable “rental” program when the flashing became available. You now have to buy it for $150 or have it done at a shop that is already setup through JHM (probably 2 hours labor so figure $150-$200).
